What's New on the Wellesley CWIS - Fall of 1996
December 10, 1996
Media Services has a new Home Page that we think you will find easier to
use when looking for the media service you need. Using a form right on the web page,
you can send a full-information request for equipment and projectionist or videographer
services. If you would like to see the layout of the Clapp Library video
room, connect to classroom equipment listings, or link to the Wellesley
College Video Network page, you'll find it easier to do from one
comprehensive list. You can find Media Services by choosing Campus Information, Administration.
The Latin America Database publishes three weekly electronic newsletters
(in English) about current events in Latin America. You can read
SOURCEMEX and ECOCENTRAL on economic issues and NOTISUR on
political issues. All newsletters on the LADB Web site have searchable indexes.
The LADB Web site is a major improvement over our awkward (and limited)
Telnet access during the past few years. You can utilize the Wellesley College Library's "institutional subscription"
to the newsletters either through the Internet Research Resources, Academic Departments, Latin American Studies or by searching for the
titles in the Library's Web-version Online Catalog.
The Cognitive Science pages should be of interest to anyone thinking of
majoring in Cognitive Science. They describe the major, the requirements,
and the faculty in more detail than can be found in the catalog.
They also answer some commonly asked questions about the major such as "Can
I get a job with a degree in cognitive science"? and "Can I go abroad and
do a major in cognitive science?" You can find them by going to Campus Information, Academic, Departments and Programs.

The Film Studies home page presents a full listing of this year's courses
in film and video, as well as profiles of the faculty who teach film; each
faculty member has also contributed a "Top Ten" list of movies he or she recommends.
Choose Campus Information, Academics, Academic Departments to find it.
Professor Yue Hu's innovative use of presentation software in her
introductory physics course has been added to a list of profiles describing Wellesley
Instructional Technology Projects. Not only can you read about the projects, but you can experience the results by downloading two examples of Yue's work: a Persuasion Player file on optics and a HyperCard stack which animates
standing waves. These and more can be found by selecting Campus Info, Academics, Computing/IS, Instructional Technology.

The WHOIS Directory is now on the CWIS! You can search for student, faculty, and staff phone numbers, email addresses, and office locations using your web browser, rather than having to be logged into Lucy. This information is only available to on-campus users. You can find the Directory by selecting Campus Information.
The Reference Collection has recently been updated; here's some of the new additions:
You can find the above and much more by choosing Internet Research Resources, Reference Collection.
An all-new Internet Resources for Africana Studies page includes information covering specific countries, news, policy, minorities, and connections to online journals. Go to Internet Research Resources, Academic Departments.

The Political
Science Department web pages offer information on the
faculty, major, courses, and discipline as a whole. Interested
students
and others looking for information about what political science is and
how
to major in it at Wellesley will find all the news they need, either
right
on the pages or in some related links, including some good
web resources for the elections and politics in general. You can find
these pages by choosing
Campus Information, Academics, Academic Departments.
The standard index for demographers, Population Index, has been added
to our
page of Internet
Resources for Sociology. In digital form,
this important bibliography is much easier to use than the print
counterpart.
In addition, the online version provides enhanced capabilities for free
text
and controlled vocabulary searches for subjects ranging from fertility
and
migration to urbanization and inequality. Choose Internet Research
Resources,
ACADEMIC Departments, Sociology.
The Jean
Baker Miller Training Institute is a post-degree clinical training
program based on the relational and crosscultural model developed at
the
Stone Center, Wellesley College. You'll find information about the
new Fall and Spring
courses; workshops for the general public; the Summer Training
Institute; the continuing Conversation/Colloquium Series; outside
speaking
engagements presented by JBMTI faculty; and how to start a study group
in
your area! You can find them at

We've slightly redesigned our home page, moving a number of unrelated
items from the "General" page to
more appropriate locations under Internet
Research Resources. There you'll find significant improvements,
such as
- Expanded electronic Reference collection.
- Best-of-the-Net selections for each academic department.
- Best-of-the-Net selections for interdisciplinary areas such as
Government Documents, News, and Maps.
- Recommended Directories and Indexes for searching the Internet
- Links to other information such as Weather, Finding People, and
servers at other colleges and universities worldwide.
The new Regional
Information page includes links for Boston-area entertainment,
transportation, and news resources,
including the Wicked Good Guide to Boston English, and On Campus,
Boston.com's special resources for college students complete with links
to all Boston Globe news articles related to Wellesley College.
Biological
Sciences has put up their pages, covering the major (including
information for pre-med students), course listings, faculty pages,
facilities, and even
a page for keeping track of departmental alumnae! You can find them
under Campus Information, Academics, Academic Departments.
The new Science
Center Home Page is a resource for students, faculty
and others interested in learning more about grants, services,
scholarships
and summer programs administered by the Science Center Office. Also
included are lists of S.C. staff members and their functions,
membership
in S.C. faculty committees, and links to all Science Departments
currently
on-line. Coming soon will be a section for prospective students and
others
on 'Science at Wellesley', detailing student research opportunities and
post-graduation 'placements' of Wellesley science graduates. To find
the
Science Center pages, choose Campus Information, Academics.

A selection of the best newspaper and news
magazine Web sites
is now available under Internet Research Resources, News. Headline
news, individual
newspapers useful for personal and academic research interests,
and comprehensive lists of newspapers and news services outside the
U.S. are listed.
For example, it includes the
especially useful full-text site of The Washington Post. The site is
easy to use, updated very frequently, and covers today's issue as
well as a two week backfile of this major newspaper. The same page has
a new pointer to Academe This
Week, the electronic
version ot The Chronicle of Higher Education, an important source of
information about colleges and universities.
Many Internet
Resources for Academic departments and related programs
have been updated. Here's a sampling:
- Economics
- New features include access to the White House Briefing
Room for economic statistics, an upgraded version of the
Economic Report of the President which includes the statistical
appendix, and economic news feature, and the classification
scheme used by the Journal of Economic Literature.
- Election
'96
- Updating reflects the change in the campaign from an open
race to having major candidates defined. Three new links join the
perennial favorites "Project Vote Smart" and "ElectNet" to add
news, close tracking of candidate issues, and public opinion polls.
- Legal
Studies
- Substantially expanded coverage, including "How Our Laws
Are Made", the valuable essay by the House Law Revision Counsel, an
electronic exhibit about the making of the Declaration of Independence,
and
treaty and human rights law resources.
- Maps
- Expanded content to include access to major government map
producers, as well as detailed information on map projections. In
addition, a link to the Yahoo Maps site will allow users to test the
accuracy of this map-creation service.
- Russian
Language and Literature
- Added links to pages on major authors, such as Dostoevsky,
Pushkin, Tolstoy, Akhmatova, and others as well as cultural resources.
- Russian Area
Studies
- Has increased access to news coverage on Russia and Eastern
economics and sociology.

Bureau
of Labor Statistics electronic data archives, as well as a financial
time series
resource and two major collections of statistical data, one of which is
searchable.

by choosing Campus Information, then Administration and Campus
Services, and
finally Alumnae Association.

The American
Sociologist
publishes papers, comments, and other writings on topics of
professional and disciplinary
concern to sociologists. The editors seek papers that examine the
intellectual, practical, and ethical
issues that affect the work, careers, and perspectives of sociologists.
In addition, the editors especially encourage research and reporting on
the ways in which sociological knowledge and skills relate to issues
of broad public concern, past, present, and future.
