What's New on the Wellesley College CWIS, September - December 1997

As one of the Twelve Conversations engaging the campus this year, the web site representing work on the Campus Master Plan is a "must see" for everyone. Working papers, historical information, news about events, and discussion options are all features of this extensive site.

The Ruhlman Conference, a showcase for student research, will be held again in Spring 1998. The conference home page features a conference announcement, a form to be printed out and submitted by presenters, and information about last year's presentations. The schedule for the upcoming conference is anticipated in the Spring.

Academics

The Quantitative Reasoning Requirement home page explains the curricular requirement and its components. The new geography course which fulfills the requirement is highlighted.

A recently-developed page for the Wellesley College Summer Research Program provides links to both the Chemistry and Biology Departments. It includes a list of participants as well as outlines of their research projects.

Administration and Campus Services

Keep up-to-date by consulting the new Wellesley College Calendar provided by the Office of Public Information on a biweekly basis.

Friends Groups

The Wellesley College Friends of Horticulture site features information about the group, a self-guided tour of the greenhouses, and information on upcoming events.

Internet Research Resources

The newly expanded page of Internet Resources for Peace and Justice Studies features organizations concerned with peace, justice, and human rights which are now using the Internet as a means of rapid grassroots communication, a forum for advocacy, and resource for legal and policy information. As a sample of the 15 sites included, check PeaceNet, a repository of current information on a wide range of peace issues; the Directory of Human Rights Resources on the Internet, which combines a directory of peace and justice groups, a bibliographic database, an events calendar, and a helpline; and Women's Human Rights Resources, a full text file of law and policy documents maintained by the Bora Laskin Law Library.

Internet Research Resources for Psychobiology has been revised and expanded. The section especially for students links to relevant newsletters such as On the Brain from the Harvard Mahoney Neuroscience Institute, brain atlases, and a group of training and job opportunities. Especially for faculty are the links to the Society for Neuroscience and the Virtual Library in Neuroscience.

A revised and updated page of Internet Resources for Mathematics includes sections for students (majors, minors, and student teachers), for faculty, and highlights relevant full text online journals to which the library subscribes. On the Library's Connections page, mathematicians will find MathSciNet [Wellesley connections only] has been added to the array of products. MathSciNet, the online version of the major indexing and abstracting service in the field of mathematics, is a product of the American Mathematical Society.

Several general resources have been updated. New links on the Internet Research Resources for News page include online editions of the Jerusalem Post , the Los Angeles Times , the Philadelphia Inquirer, and the Times of London. Also, a link to NewsWorks brings content from a cooperative of 100 local newspapers such as the Fresno Bee and Newsday. The Internet Resources for Weather Information brings access to local, national, and world-wide weather resources, as well as air quality, tide, storm data. For fun, try seeing what the weather looks like in other localities by connecting to the WeatherNet WeatherCams page. Finally, the updated Wellesley Regional Information page guides you to restaurant reviews, movie, television, and theater listings, local news, sports and recreation information, and travel directions for the Wellesley/Boston area.

Research Centers

The Wellesley Centers for Women home page reflects the new partnership of the Center for Research on Women and the Stone Center for Developmental Services and Studies. Sections on "Happenings", "Publications", and "Projects" highlight the wide variety of research activities of the Centers.

Student Organizations

The 1997/1998 College Government page has minutes of the weekly meetings as well as directory information [local only viewing] on the Cabinet and Senators. You can also find out about the workings of College Government, read the CG Constitution, and find out how to give feedback.

Academics

The 1997/98 Course Catalog features linkages to class schedules, academic department home pages, and MIT course information.

Claire Fontijn of the Music Department has created a web site which includes information on the Wellesley Collegium Musicum, her own papers and publications, as well as current projects she is undertaking.

The Philosophy Department Handbook, provides guidance for students of philosophy on course selection and career patterns. Profiles of faculty and a history of philosophy at Wellesley are also included.

What do you know about papyri? Need the text of Cicero's orations? Want to know if you can study ancient texts in English translation? Consult the home page of the Departments of Greek and Latin.

Judith Black's page on her photographic work, entitled "I Need to See You" is in support of an exhibition currently at the Davis Museum and Cultural Center Contemporary Gallery.

Administration and Campus Services

The Faculty Handbook, contact information, staff profiles and descriptions of the Deans' major responsibilities appear on the home page of the Office of the Dean of the College.

The rich diversity of Wellesley's multifaith community is evident when you visit the Office of Religious Life home page. Features include calendars of religious holidays and local celebrations , biographies of the Religious and Spiritual Life staff, information on Peace and Justice Studies, a Code of Religious Conduct, and connections to the student religious organizations.

The recently-dedicated Knapp Media and Technology Center in Clapp Library is the hot new place to be on campus. Find out about the services it offers for students, faculty and staff. Armchair travelers will enjoy photographs of the new facility and information on technology demonstrations during President's Weekend.

Friends Groups

Friends of Wellesley College Athletics has a new page which gives the names of the national committee members and the schedule for the upcoming Homecoming celebration.

Information Services

A new page especially for Marine Biology (BiSc 210) is now linked to Internet Research Resources/Academic Department/Biological Science. The page includes a virtual tour of the Smithsonian's OCEAN PLANET EXHIBIT 2 years before it's Boston visit. Of local interest are the Mass. Bay Information Server and the Stellwagen Bank Information System. Just for fun, try FISH FAQ's or LOBSTER GOODIES.

This Fall, the Library made five new "connections" - links to important research sites. Three of the connections provide full text:

  • LION, for pre-twentieth century English and American literature
  • Lexis/Nexis, for federal and state laws, law reviews, and news sources
  • JSTOR, for complete runs of 20 important journals, volume 1 to late '80's

Two of the connections are specialized indexes:

  • BIOSIS, for the life sciences
  • Art, for indexes to the literature of the history or art and architecture.

The Internet Research Resources page for German has been enriched by the addition of a site devoted to THE GERMAN SPELLING REFORM and by a set of sites useful for researching Vienna in 1900.

Governments, research organizations, and interest groups increasingly take advantage of the Net to publish official data and primary documents, to share research, or to promote viewpoints and positions. The new Internet Resources for Political Science page focuses on primary data and texts. The 25 sites assembled there can help: research the history of a bill, study presidential rhetoric, investigate public opinion, or compare constitutions from around the world. Of special interest are Northwestern University's multimedia Supreme Court Database, a collection of links for the study of migration, and an online library of classical and modern political theory.

A new page of Internet Resources for International Relations takes advantage of the presence of supranational and international organizations, governments, and activist groups on the Web. Resources on this page range from international organizations and international law to diplomacy, peace, and the global economy. Check the Diana Human Rights Database, a file of human rights law; the Multilaterals Project, a compendium of conventions on cultural protection, biodiversity, and other issues; and official sites for the UN, NATO, or the US. Department of State, among others.

Student Life

The new Parent-Family Weekend page includes a detailed schedule, hours of campus facilities, and other information useful to attendees.
