What's New on the Wellesley CWIS: January - June 1998May 26, 1998Other documents of particular interest to the Wellesley community include the Multicultural Policy Memo [local connections only] and the Final Report of the Ad Hoc Working Group on Race and Diversity [local connections only]. Information about the 120th Commencement -- schedules, receptions, academic regalia, the speaker, etc. -- appears on a new page. The College is planning its 125th Anniversary activities, and a new web site shares the community announcement and provides information about the 100th Anniversary observation. An additional feature is a form soliciting your comments and suggestions to be shared with the Steering Committee. The Traditions website, part of the "About Wellesley" content, was authored by two CS 110 students, Amy Gembala and Chimi Tornow. It has descriptions of some of Wellesley's most cherished traditions and features photos and memorabilia from the College Archives.
The web pages for American Studies, an Interdepartmental Major, include course descriptions, readings, information about the faculty, and links to helpful outside resources. Follow the lava flow from the erupting volcano to the Geology Department web site. The site includes faculty and course information, links to outside resources, and will be expanded to include course syllabi for the Fall soon. "Benvenuti al Dipartimento d'Italiano" is the salutation on the homepage for the Italian Department. Learn all about their courses and faculty, with a promise of more information to come.
Reports [restricted to campus viewing], guidance on access to departmental budget information and use of the Banner system, and staff profiles appear in the Budget Office web site. The website of Budget Advisory Committee [Wellesley connections only] is rich in information about the membership and functions of the Committee as well as background readings, etc. A form solicits community input. This useful and informative site will be growing in the future. Parents/families and students will be pleased with all of the helpful information available in the new Bursar's Office web pages. Meet the staff, then learn about the payment plans, how to read a student account statement, means of making payments, tax ramifications for 1998, and the like. [note: this site removed 10/99 due to reorganization] The Equal Opportunity and Multicultural Policy Office is responsible for initiatives to enhance diversity and multiculturalism at Wellesley. Connected here are major policy statements (Multicultural Policy Memo [Wellesley connections only] and the Final Report of the Ad Hoc Working Group on Race and Diversity [Wellesley connections only]). In addition, you will find descriptive information on the initiatives of the office, job postings, a calendar of sponsored events, outside links, and more. The International Studies and Services pages have been updated and expanded. Consult these pages to learn the specifics about international study at Wellesley and around the world, including all of the international studies programs in which students may participate. Content is being added on events and deadlines, the 25th Anniversary celebration of the Slater International Center, web sites of international interest, resources for living in the world, and more. The Student Employment Office in Human Resources features the Student Employment Handbook as well as listings of part-time jobs on and off campus and a job bank of employers who have posted positions in the past.
Journal as Artist's Book is an online exhibition created by Marilyn Hatch of the Clapp Library Special Collections Department to feature the work of students in the Wintersession Workshop sponsored by the Clapp Library Book Arts Laboratory. Visit this visual delight, and learn about what inspired each artist. The Internet Resources for Economics page has been revised to highlight a number of new resources of interest to economists. Among the new additions: a site on the history of the minimum wage, a CPI calculation machine, compendia of international economic statistics, a Central Banking Resource Center, and a site for Asian Business and Economics. Web-based information on women and the economy is now more abundant and is represented by links sites on women and work, family, earnings, and other policy-related information. MERIA, the Middle East Review of International Affairs, offers news and the full text of articles on policy and developments in the Middle East. Hosted by the Begin-Sadat Center for Strategic Studies, the site also includes a database of studies on US policy in the Middle East. It has been added to the Internet Resources for International Relations page. The Internet Resources for Philosophy page now includes Project Archelogos. Project Archelogos permits searching of selected ancient Greek philosophical arguments, plus analyses of those arguments written or compiled by modern philosophers. Douglass: Archives of American Public Address has been added to the Internet Resources for Political Science page. Named after Frederick Douglass, one of America's greatest orators, this full-text collection contains almost 100 speeches from the colonial period to the present. Speeches can be searched by title, speaker, topic, or chronologically. The Douglass collection will continue to grow as its sponsors at Northwestern University are actively seeking new additions. A good source for students of political communication. College Source is now available in the Library's collection of Full Text Online for on-campus connections. This Career Guidance Foundation web site features over 7,000 U. S. college catalogs in cover-to-cover, original page format representing 2-year, 4-year, graduate and professional schools. The table-of-contents and index of each catalog is fully hyperlinked to the content. The Adobe Acrobat Reader required for viewing is available on most public computers on campus. Another addition to the to Full Text Online is U. S. Law Week Cases on the Web [Wellesley connections only]. This full-text collection includes decisions on significant cases heard by the U. S. Supreme Court, district courts, appeals courts, and state supreme courts after July 1, 1997. Use your Internet browser's FIND button for quick and easy searches by case names. Use the Law Week Search Engine for keyword topic searches. A summary and analysis of each case can be found in print volumes of U. S. Law Week, Clapp Reference Index Table 4. Check out these new additions to the online Reference Collection. The Borderlands Encyclopedia is a new project by the University ot Texas to examine issues related to the United States-Mexico border area. The Commonwealth Yearbook outlines the history, geography, constitutions, governments and economies of its fifty members. Finally, Roberts Rules of Order are now online! The College policy on Acceptable Use of Computer Resources provides guidance for the community in appropriate sharing of computing resources in light of the Honor Code, legal requirements, and other campus policies. Among the topics discussed are: use of the College seal, sharing passwords, chain email, commercial use, and misuse of intellectual property. The Copyright FAQ provides clear and helpful information about appropriate use of intellectual property covered by copyright law. Links to the College's formal Copyright Policy as well as external resources are provided.
Database Systems' pages are the place to learn about the Banner System from A to Z. You can even download a form to request a new Banner account from this helpful site. Wellesley College Friends of Art is an impressive national organization of 1500 members which supports the exhibitions, programming, and acquisitions efforts of the Davis Museum. Find out how you can be come involved by consulting its web site. The Spring issue of the Friends of the Library Newsletter reports on a panel by psychological therapists Jean Baker Miller [Director of Education, Stone Center] and Irene Pierce Stiver on "The Healing Connection: How Women Form Relationships in Therapy and in Life." Another article describes the imaginative results of a workshop held in the Printing Lab in Clapp Library on "Making Memories: Creating an Artist's Book from Personal Experience."
African Awareness Now is an organization dedicated to increasing interest in and the awareness of concerns of Africa and the African diaspora. By consulting these pages, you can learn of events, news of Africa, general country and travel information, study abroad opportunities, etc. Asian Student Union seeks to promote interest in and understanding of Asian and Asian American affairs as well as to provide service to the community. A calendar of events is joined by pages on cultural, political, and social aspects and a delightful photo gallery. Cafe Hoop's pages include a virtual tour, a history of the Cafe, a menu and schedule information, and "hoopie" profiles. Enter the Borough of Felding, the home of the Felding Medieval Society at Wellesley. An affiliate of the Society for Creative Anachronism, Felding is devoted to the re-creation of the Middle Ages. Learn about its activities and officers, and find links to other Boroughs in the Barony of Carolingia. GenerAsians , a literary magazine focussing on Asian/Asian American culture, has a new site with submission and subscription information, a guestbook, and staff profiles. Visit the pages of the Investment Society to find out about investing, participate in a mock investment game, peruse the recommended reading list, and learn about working in the field of finance. The Korean American Students Association site features information on their executive board, a photo gallery and calendar of events, as well as links to other KASAs and other on campus and outside resources. The Molly's Pub page includes a history, menu, schedule of events, and staff information. Multicultural Council's Programming page features a calendar of on-campus events sponsored by the organizations comprising Multicultural Council. It is intended for information as well as to help organizations plan their own activities by encouraging cross-programming and collaborative efforts. Thus both tentative and final programming are included. The Schneider Board of Governors site has been completely redesigned since this winter. Check it out! The Tupelos homepage starts with a great graphic, then continues with a history, contact and audition information, description of their latest CD, and member profiles. WZLY , Wellesley's student-run radio station, has a site which lists programming, station news and management information. Yanvalou , the Dance and Drum ensemble founded in 1990, has a site with information about its performances and the instruments, as well as photos of Yanvalou in action.

The Wellesley College Directories page has expanded content beyond the two directories of persons. The extant information on Standing Committees of Academic Council and Student Organization Voicemail/Homepage directories have been linked to the page, and joined by information from the campus phone directory. Check out the new Academic Department Chairs and Administrative Assistants list as well as the Departmental Directory. The latter not only provides office phone numbers, but is linked to departmental web pages as well. Wellesley connections only.
Africana Studies' pages have been revised and expanded. The site features a departmental description, lists of faculty and courses taught, news and activities, course descriptions, Internet links, and information on the Trinidad and Tobago Literature Project. The new web site of the Anthropology Department covers course descriptions and schedules, notes on the major and minor, faculty information, and departmental events. A new page highlights the Biological Chemistry major of the Departments of Biological Sciences and Chemistry. Directions for election of the major, information on the director, and useful links on educational/professional resources are featured. The homepage for Wellesley's new Mellon-funded geography course, EXTD 110: Introduction to Geographical Concepts, places the syllabus and other essential information online. The image on the homepage is of particular interest: a 16th century metaphorical map of "Europe as a Virgin". The Faculty Profiles alphabetical listing maintained by the Public Affairs Office has been updated and redesigned. Faculty: if your profile is newly added to your departmental pages, be sure to contact Public Affairs to be linked to this useful and informative site. Jean Baker Miller Training Institute, a post-degree clinical training program based at the Stone Center, has expanded its web presence. Course descriptions, public workshops, the Conversation/Colloquium Series, as well as information on faculty, working papers, other publications and more are all features of this site. Revised and greatly expanded content for the Learning and Teaching Center is now available featuring programs and services for faculty and students. Find out about teaching partners or videotaping classes, the tutoring schedule, and successful study tips. Print out a calendar template to help you organize your time well or learn about upcoming events. The Sociology Department Online Handbook has been expanded and updated. It features information on courses, faculty, opportunities in the department such as research, prizes, etc., career choice information, and much more. Student Research and Travel Grants are available through the Office of the Dean of the College. Learn about funds available to encourage faculty- student collaboration and student research. Print out the forms necessary for application. Second semester deadline for junior and senior applicants: March 2d, 1998. The new departmental site for Women"s Studies includes an introduction to the department and the faculty, suggestions for choosing an advisor, directions for election, course descriptions and cross-listed courses, and sections about faculty and student research in Women's Studies.
Visit the new web site of the Office of the President. This extensive offering features a welcoming letter, biographical information, speeches, important announcements, and , in the "Pics" section, a Quicktime movie of Diana rollerblading during a television interview.
Internet Research Resources for Japanese Studies has been revised and expanded. New listings include EDICT, a major new Japanese/English dictionary (60,000+ entries). Other sites provide opportunities to engage with Japanese through full texts of classical literature, poetry, proverbs, and news media. Connections to helpful information on how to access and display Japanese text characters on the web are also included. A revised Internet Research Resources for Legal Studies page adds a collection of "Core Documents of American Democracy", "Understanding the Federal Courts", and the full text of the "General Laws of Massachusetts". Also expanded, Internet Research Resources for Sociology adds several new links to bibliographic and full-text resources. These include a series of continuously updated bibliographies from the Sociological Abstracts web site on topics such as sexual harassment, AIDS, alcoholism, and domestic violence. Links to searchable full-text backfiles (to 1991) of two core journals, DEMOGRAPHY and CONTEMPORARY SOCIOLOGY, are available via the library's JSTOR subscription. Additional sites offer bibliographic and data resources on Migration and Population Dynamics, Nationalism, and Ethnicity. Re-organized and expanded, the Library Handbook pages provide a survey of the collections, services, policies, staff, and departments. Enjoy the colorful Special Collections pages, the "Women in Book Arts" online exhibit, the "Daunting Dangers to Our Library Books" cartoon strip created by students for the Library's preservation program. The Library's homepage has a new look and enhanced links to most frequently used information. The long, complicated menu of "connections" has been replaced by links to separate collections pages which provide access to full-text online (journals, newspapers, books, etc.), online indexes and databases, and a list of links to online catalogs of other libraries. The entire Government Documents section in Research Resources has been redone and greatly expanded, including pages for Local/Municipal Governments, Massachusetts & Other States, Foreign Governments, International Organizations, and Government Directories. Also included is a Virtual Federal Documents Collection comprised of full- text government publications in almost 60 categories, from tax forms to educational statistics, census data to historical documents. Check out the new, revised Reference Collection! Some of the exciting new additions are: Encyclopedia Mythica: an Encyclopedia of Mythology, Folklore, and Legend; Scholarly Societies and Scholarly Communications, providing information about both worldwide; Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy (still under construction); NIRA's World Directory of Think Tanks; and Grants Web. Wellesley Computing News and Notes provides up-to-date information on newly-available software and documentation on the CWIS, as well as important notices for faculty, staff, and students. A revised and updated Wellesley Webmaster's Page includes links to items of general usefulness: college and university web sites, providers of commercial Internet services, an electronic citation guide, web style manuals (local and general), HTML coding guides and code validators, the list of colors suitable for best cross-platform viewing, graphics and icons resources, and sites for computing shareware and freeware.
The Wellesley College Choir homepage provides information on the organization and its members. The concert schedule gives dates of upcoming events and links to background on the spring tour to Italy. Photos are promised soon! General Judiciary's page lists student members and faculty/staff advisors of this group which administers the Honor Code. Helpful information about the Honor Code and its interpretation as well as plagiarism "do's and don'ts" appear here, as well as links to resources for bibliographic and electronic citation. Schneider Board of Governors, the student entertainment board, has a new page describing the group's efforts and members, highlighting past events, and inviting suggestions. Watch these pages for future programming information! Sexual Health Educators work to provide information about all aspects of women's sexual health. Their pages include many links to the Health Services page, as well as a "frequently-asked questions" section.
