What's New on the Wellesley CWIS?
Summer 1999
General The Chemistry Department is hosting a web site on the history and continuing evaluation of chemical contamination in and around Paintshop Pond. The site condenses about 150 years of Paintshop Pond's history from the Henry Wood's Sons Company factory which manufactured paint pigments, to the College's efforts to clean up lead and chromium contamination. The site also offers years of data from ground and surface water monitoring and interprets the data based on the EPA's drinking water standards. The Family Weekend Schedule for October 1999 was added early in the fall semester and continues to be updated as events are added to the weekend schedule. Library/Computing We call your attention to the computing at Wellesley page with its latest Computing News and Notes newsletter, plus documentation on FirstClass, virus protection, and all the information needed on other software used by students, faculty and staff. Special Collections has put up a site with five manuscript Books of Hours. The manuscripts were made in France and the Low Countries from the early 15th century to the the first quarter of the 16th century. "Whether modest or ornate, every Book of Hours is unique, and each one provides a significant resource for studying the history of religious thought and art." Wellesley College Archives Look on the library's full-text online page for a new link to Science Online's Web site. Not only the text of the journal SCIENCE since October 1995, but also a daily (weekdays) news service and a mentoring service, too. Read the description next to the blue arrowhead for more information. The new Internet Resources for Biological Sciences page is a starting place to explore molecular, cellular and organismal biology websites. It includes several online reference books, as well as links to major indexes like PubMed and BIOSITES and a new networking took from the American Association for the Advancement of Science ("Next Wave"). On Next Wave, you can find career-job advice, issues on women in science, and job market news. On the new Internet Resources for Mathematics page, you'll find links to information directed to future mathematics teachers (K-12), lists of mathematical quotations, nontechnical abstracts of mathematics in the news, and lists of frequently used mathematical contants. Faculty and thesis students will want to check out the MathSciNet link, as well as links to backfiles of full-text journals in mathematics. Career advice from "Next Wave", a networking tool from the AAAS, is also included. A source of full-text books has been added to the Internet Resources for Spanish page. LIBRO: The Library of Iberian Reources Online provides the full-text of recent, but out-of-print scholarly books from university presses. Eventually 50 books will be included. Focus now is on the Hispanic Middle Ages but will be expanded to the 16th and 17 centuries over the next three years. Books retain original pagination. LIBRO provides a rather crude, simple keyword searching system. Copyright status information is included. Links were added to Internet Resources for International Relations, including content on the Organization for African Unity and the European Union. The Organization of African Unity includes information on programs, policy initiatives, and economic data for a major Panafrican organization. European Union Internet Resources, from the University of California, Berkley, provides links to EU agencies as well as related information. The Internet News page has been revamped to include many new online newspapers, magazines and news sites such as CNN Interactive and the Associated Press. Administration The Office for Resources has a new web presence including information on individual giving, corporate giving, planned giving, and the 7 most frequently asked questions about giving to the college. In addition, you can now fill out an online form which allows you to pledge, or make a cash gift with Mastercard, Visa, or American Express. (requires a 4.0 or higher browser) The Residential Life Office has put up a new site which details residential policies, including information about residential staff and house council. The College Club updated its page to incude scheduled events, including their famous six-course wine dinners, for the 1999/2000 year. The Student's Aid Society now has a site describing the mission of the society, as well as its history. The site includes information on how to make a donation to the Student's Aid Society as well. The Environmental Health and Safety Office has put up a site on the CWIS. Although still under construction, the site offers links to training information and various health and safety sources. The First Year Office greatly expanded its site to include information on the Cluster program, the writing program, SEP, orientation, advising and mentoring and residential staff. There is an extremely detailed FAQ page, applicable to a great deal of the Wellesley College community as well as First Years. The new Financial Aid site, directed particularly to prospective students, includes a downloadable financial aid application as well as a spreadsheet to compare the Wellesley financial aid package to packages offered by other colleges. Reach Out to Schools: Social Competancy Program has a redesigned and enhanced web presence under its program name: Open Circle. The program is housed at the Stone Center, and is part of the Wellesley Centers for Women. Open Circle partners with schools and communities to help children become caring, ethical human beings, contributing citizens and life-long learners. Academic The Religion Department has a new web page, including information on the Religion major and Religion courses. The English Department added a page on Shakespeare at Wellesley College (Local viewing only), highlighting on-campus events, courses, and Internet resources. Student Organizations The Wellesley Widows (a capella group, not bereavement support group!) put up a page detailing its history at Wellesley. Wellesley women have been "Widowed" since 1949, when a Wellesley singing group called the "College Octet" borrowed a song about college widows from the Yale Wiffenpoofs, changed the lyrics to suit their circumstances, and subsequently adopted the new name. You can listen to sound clips from the Widows' latest album, or order the CD online. The Phi SIgma Lecture Society has also recently added a page to the CWIS. The page describes the society's purpose and history, and is sprinkled generously throughout with pictures from the 98-99 academic year.
