The Wellesley College web site Purpose and Description

The Wellesley College web site is an information system intended to present an integrated view of the College to the members of the Wellesley College community, as well as to alumnae, prospective students and others with an interest. Within the menu hierarchy, a broad array of local and Internet resources are made available.

The College web site is a project of Information Services at Wellesley College and is mounted on a World Wide Web server. Units of Information Services operate the central server, maintain the document files, and ensure that the College web site is fully accessible to the Wellesley and Internet communities via client software.

The IS/Library/Digital Technologies Group is responsible for the organizational structure of the College web site. Planning and policy are the responsibility of the the same group, informed by the College web site Advisory Group.

The local information offered in the College web site is created and updated by a wide variety of units and organizations within the college. Each unit is responsible for the content which it provides.

The College web site is a growing resource always "under construction". As such, it does not present a complete picture of the College. Wellesley College reserves the right to make changes at its discretion in information affecting policies, fees, curricula or other matters covered in this College web site.

Guidelines for Information Providers

Who Can Provide Information To Wellesley College's web site?

Academic departments and programs, administrative offices or departments, and recognized student organizations of Wellesley College may provide information to the College web site. Additions to the College web site may be made by individuals only under the auspices of these departments, programs, or organizations. Each contributing unit or organization should designate a College web site contact person [provider] who will be responsible for the content of the information provided. Information resources should be reviewed by this person on a regular basis to ensure accuracy and currency.

Why Participate In Wellesley College's web site?

The primary purpose of the College web site is to support the information needs of the Wellesley community and interested outside users. Because the College web site provides a single point of entry for the searcher, the identification of needed information is simplified and these resources are more fully utilized. Some of the advantages of providing information in this way include:

  • Making your department or organization more visible within the Wellesley community

  • Saving production time and expenses of distribution and printing

  • Fast, easy updating of information

  • Accessible 24 hours a day, 365 days of year to all members of the community via the campus-wide network

  • Cost-effective means to reach a world-wide audience

  • Easy to use: links between files encourage browsing and resources are indexed

What Kinds Of Information Are Included?

Frequently consulted information that needs to be made widely available either to the Wellesley community and/or to off-campus audiences should be included in Wellesley College's Web Site. In addition, information that is frequently updated should also be considered for inclusion with the understanding that it will be updated on a reasonable schedule.

College publications as well as information currently distributed via campus-wide mailings or the electronic bulletin board are candidates for the College web site. Examples include:

  • Information about student organizations and campus services

  • Administrative or academic department policies

  • Schedules of lectures, plays or movies on campus

  • Athletic event schedules

  • Directory information

  • Faculty research interests and publications

  • Course offerings and syllabi

What Assistance Is Available To You?

The Digital Technologies Group will help you design a strategy for generating versions of your documents that are compatible with the Wellesley format and will teach you to transfer these documents to the College web server. The staff will also consult with you about the appropriate location(s) for your information to reside within the College web site menu structure and recommend links between documents to facilitate browsing by users.

The Wellesley College web site is based on World Wide Web server software that distributes text, graphics and sound. Wellesley College's web site is particularly suited to presenting documents created using HyperText Markup Language (HTML). Converter applications can translate documents produced in Microsoft Word or other formats into HTML. HTML documents may also be produced using a word processor or text editor. For more information on creating HTML documents, see the resources listed on the Webmaster's page.

The Digital Technologies Group can also teach you to convert your graphics into the specific formats (such as GIF and JPEG) required by the College web site. College personnel are also encouraged to take advantage of the extensive schedule of training opportunities offered by Information Services staff as well as material provided in our Element K contract.

For further information or technical support, contact Wellesley's Webmaster, Claire Loranz (webmaster@wellesley.edu ). If you are interested in becoming an information provider, you should also contact Wellesley's Webmaster. Provider documentation is available for consultation on the College web site.
