Guidelines for Faculty Computing Equipment

Guidelines for Faculty Computing Equipment

Computers for New Tenure Track Faculty

Each new tenure- track faculty member will be provided with a new standard desk top computer, on either PC or Mac platform, for their office computing needs, at the beginning of the first year. The equipment will be connected to the College- wide network with a high speed Ethernet connection. If enhanced capabilities are needed for the faculty member's research, these should be presented to the Dean of the College at the time a new contract is negotiated, as part of a research "startup" request.

Computers for Continuing Faculty

The College has a 3.5- year plan for replacement of computing equipment for continuing faculty. Requests for replacement under this plan should be emailed to Wayne Randall in Information Services (IS).

Computers for Faculty on Non-Continuing Contracts

Desk top computers will be assigned to faculty, based on availability as determined by IS. Computers used by faculty who have left the College will be reassigned by IS based on prioritized needs across all academic departments.

General Policies for Faculty Computing Equipment

All computers remain the property of Wellesley College. Computers are provided for faculty to work in their offices. Equipment may not be removed from the established location without approval from the Dean of the College.

Faculty Printing Needs

To meet the printing needs of all faculty, networked laser printers are provided for each academic department or cluster of departments.

Policy on Laptops

We do not support the purchase of laptop computers. Newly-hired tenure-track faculty are given a new desktop computer; they also have a small reimbursable research account that can be used to purchase computer hardware and software. We encourage faculty who need a laptop computer to use their research account or their personal funds to make such a purchase.
