The Wellesley College
Choir has been an important part of campus life since its
founding in 1900. Numbering between 50 and 60 women, voices
are selected by audition held at the beginning of the academic
year. Choir members are drawn from a wide range of academic
disciplines and cultural backgrounds and present numerous
concerts on and off campus.
The Choir's on campus
concert series normally includes three traditional programs:
a fall concert, endowed annually since 1964 in memory of
Betty Edwards Dober '40, Christmas Vespers, and a spring
concert, endowed biannually since 1972 in memory of Marjorie
Copland Baum '27.
Directed by Dr.
Lisa Graham, the Choir performs music from the 13th-20th
centuries. In addition to presenting works for women's voices,
the Choir often collaborates with men's choirs such as the
Harvard Glee Club, the Virginia Glee Club, and the Cornell
Glee Club to present works for mixed voices and orchestra.
Recent commissions by the Choir include works by Marjorie
Merryman, Jonathan Holland and Brian Hulse. The Choir has
undertaken three international tours, including, most recently,
a ten-day tour to Italy during which the Choir performed
in the Vatican and at the American Academy in Rome. The choir
is also planning an upcoming tour to Prague, Czech Republic
to sing Benjamin Britten's War Requiem in an international

Team |
"A
Sailing Team?" "Since when has there been a Sailing
Team?" "Why is the school wasting its money on a
Sailing Team?" Such remarks are usually followed by repeated
threats to slash the sailing budget, slash it again, and slash
it yet a third time for good measure. Despite all odds, however,
the Wellesley College Sailing Team is a successful competitive
sailing team open to enthusiastic and dedicated individuals
with previous or no sailing experience. While many would argue
that sailing is not worthy of the term "sport," sailing
demands both intellectual and physical exertion on the part
of its members. We practice on Lake Waban out of the boathouse
here on campus three days a week in our team's FJs while two
days a week we practice out of the MIT Sailing Pavilion on
the Charles River in Tech Dinghies. As members of the NEISA
(New England Intercollegiate Sailing Association), we compete
in regattas each weekend against area teams. The team participates
in both the fall and spring sailing seasons, and additional
competitive sailing opportunities for team members, such as
frostbite sailing in the winter and racing over the summer,
abound. As of spring 2006, the sailing team has one coach and
is 15 members strong! For additional information, please email sailingteammail@wellesley.edu or
seek out any team member. We can be identified by our sun-burnt
skin, fish-smelling stench, foul language, multiple tattoos,
wooden limbs, and rowdy demeanor. |

We
aim to provide a fun and competitive atmosphere for novices
and experts. We teach speaking and analytical skills (crucial
for debate and overall success). Our team provides the chance
to practice these skills in a supportive environment, and we
test these skills in a highly competitive one. Tournaments
are weekly but not mandatory. Also, unlike high school debate,
we debate a wide range of topics. Debate cases are picked by
the students in that particular round. This provides a unique
opportunity to debate topics of personal importance. Email
