African Awareness Now 1997-1998


ARTICLE I

Name:
The name of the organization shall be African Awareness Now (AAN)


ARTICLE 11

Objectives :
AAN exists to promote the exchange of knowledge about contemporary African, Caribbean and Aftican-American issues through appropriate means, such as weekly discussions, lectures, slide shows, internships, volunteer activities, written articles and other activities, including yearly participation in the model Organization of African Unity (OAU) conference in Washington, D.C.


ARTICLE III

All members shall abide by the Honor Code.


ARTICLE IV

Membership:
Membership in this organization shall be open to all students currently enrolled in Wellesley College. AAN shall not discriminate according to color, creed religion, sexual orientation or fmandal need. AAN will offer financial aid if necessary.
Organization:
This organization shall not discriminate based on race, gender, creed, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, age or financial status.


ARTICLE V & VI

Officers and Duties:
(A) The officers of AAN shall consist of a faculty advisor(s), president(s), treasurer(s), and any other such officers of AAN as may be deemed necessary from time to time by the organization.
(B) The faculty advisor(s) shall be selected by a majority of the members at the beginning of the academic year. S/he shall have a background in the field of African Studies and shall hold the office on a voluntary basis. S/he shall advise the students as is necessary for the proposed discussions and programs of the organization.
(C) The presidents shall be the chief executive officer(s) of the AAN and shall have general supervision and control of its activities and programs. (D) The treasurers shall have general charge of the financial affairs of the organization.


ARTICLE VII

Activities/Meetings:
General meetings shall be held weekly for the purpose of discussing issues relating to contemporary Africa and deciding on policies, activities, programs, and other relevant business. At least one publicized open meeting will be held per semester.


ARTICLE VIII

Voting:
(A) For the simple transactions of business, a simple majority of members will be required.
(B) For any constitutional business, i.e- amending of the constitution, the motion must be approved or denied by 3/4 of the membership.


ARTICLE IX

Finance:
AAN will be financed through SOFC funding and through fund-raisers held throughout the year by the organization. All fundraising will be done according to SOFC regulations.


ARTICLE X

Elections:
Officers shall be elected annually by the members of AAN. Any member of AAN may be nominated or nominate herself for elections. A quorum will be required for elections.


ARTICLE XI

Adoption:
This constitution shall become valid when;
(A) adopted by a 2/ 3 majority vote or the stipulated constitutional quorum;
(B) approved by Senate
(C) a copy has been signed by the heads of the AAN and the vice-president of the College Government and filed in the College Government office and the President's office.
