African Awareness Now is an organization dedicated to increasing interest in and the awareness of concerns to Africa and the African diaspora. Members organize and perform in events such as Africa Day and the African Fashion Show to educate the college community about African cultures and traditions. We encourage members of the Wellesley community to attend lectures, cultural events and panel discussions, as well as to participate in internships that advance African development. African Awareness Now is open to all members of the college community.
AAN was founded in the 1980s as a political organization that focused on African issues, mainly Apartheid. The group played a role in the College's switch from Coca-Cola to Pepsi in protest to Coca-Cola's continued investment in South Africa, which supported the Apartheid government. Over the years the organization has evolved into more of a social support group for African students by African students.
