Constitution

Article I

The name of the organization is Alianza.

Article II

Alianza's purpose is to increase the cultural and social awareness of Latin Americans and Iberians in the Wellesley College community, and to advance the common concerns of these people. It also provides a familiar atmosphere in which students of these backgrounds can share their experiences and establish friendships through various activities.

Article III

Membership shall be open to any students who pays the student activity fee. Member selection shall not discriminate on the basis of race, creed, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, age, financial status, or disability.

Article IV

This organization shall adhere to the Wellesley College Honor Code.

Article V

Section 1: Officers President: Must be Latin American or Iberian. She is responsible for calling and chairing meetings and ensuring the group's cohesivenes. She oversees and coordinates the jobs of the other officers. The president also serves as the official voice of the organization.
Vice-President: Shares the duties with the president and assumes managerial responsibility when the president is unable to do so.
Secretary: Is responsible for taking minutes and distributing memos to the members.
Treasurer: Serves as a liaison between SOFC and the organization. She is responsible for keeping the budget, supervising the SOFC and profits accounts, maintaining accurate financial records, writing and signing checks, ensuring the deposit of profits, and making all other pertinent monetary transactions.
Social Chair: Is responsible for planning parties and other social activities.
Lecture Chair: Is responsible for finding speakers and planning lectures on issues pertaining to Latin America.

Section 2: Advisor The advisor serves as a liaison between the organization and the administrative offices of Wellesley College.

Article VI

  • General meetings will be held once a month.
  • Officers shall meet as often as necessary, a minimum of once a week.
  • Activities, including at least one publicized meeting every semester, will be open to all Wellesley College students.
  • Alianza's activities include: discussions, lectures, films, lunches, mixers, and festivals. Article VII
    1. Any member who has attended a minimum of 3 meetings shall be eligible to vote.
    2. For the transaction of business, the necessary quorum is a simple majority of voting members.
    3. For constitutional business, the necessary quorum is a three-fourths majority of voting members.
    Article VIII

    The organization shall adhere to all SOFC regulations. In addition to any SOFC funds received, the organization shall raise funds according to SOFC legistlation.

    Article IX
    1. Officers shall be elected at a planned meeting in April of each year.
    2. The election shall be by closed ballot.
    3. Officers-elect shall assume their responsibilities immediately upon election, and shall hold office for one year, or until their successors are duly elected.
    4. Co-presidents may be elected. The offices of social chair and lecture chair may also be held by either one or two people.
    5. Only voting members of the organization (see Articles III, VII) are eligible to run for office.
    Article X

    This constitution becomes valid when:
    • adopted by a two-thirds majority vote of the stipulated quorum for constitutional business (see Article VII);
    • a copy has been filed in the office of the President of the College.
    Article XI
    1. This constitution shall be reviewed in the fall of each year and resubmitted to College Government.
    2. Any amendments shall be proposed by the officers and approved by two-thirds majority vote of the stipulated quorum for constitutional business (see Article VII).
