Welcome to Wellesley College Al-Muslimat! Al-Muslimat is a student-run
organization for the Muslim women of Wellesley College. Al-Muslimat, which
means "The Muslim Women," was established in 1992, and has since
been providing Islamic support services for women from various countries,
traditions, cultures, and backgrounds. In addition to supporting Muslim
women, Al-Muslimat promotes an understanding of Islam and issues related
to Islam throughout the Wellesley College community. Al-Muslimat serves
to represent the voice of the Muslim community and to assure Muslim women
of a safe space on campus. We welcome any individuals interested in learning
about Islam to ask questions, attend our meetings and services, and to
engage in our events.
Programming
Al-Muslimat
hosts many events throughout the year, ranging from dinners and iftars
to lectures and open discussions. During the fall, we host an Islam Awareness
lecture series, and in the spring, Al-Muslimat holds a Women-in-Islam
lecture series. Al-Muslimat also co-sponsors events with other groups
and organizations on campus. In addition, Al-Muslimat is active in the
intercollegiate community, and helps to organize programming in the Boston
area. For more examples of Al-Muslimat programs, please click
here.
Academics
Al-Muslimat
continues to build relations with faculty and staff at the college. Each
year, Al-Muslimat hosts a faculty-staff iftar during Ramadan. Al-Muslimat
relies upon the support of advisors and faculty members for committees
and events. Through the Middle-Eastern Studies program, and other relevant
departments, Wellesley College is proud to offer many courses
on Islam.
Housing
While Wellesley College does not offer housing specifically for Muslim
students, there is usually a good distribution of Muslim women in each
of the complexes on campus. During Ramadan,
Al-Muslimat assigns a residence hall leader for each complex to ensure
that residents who are fasting have a familial environment in which to
celebrate Ramadan. The Office of Religious and Spiritual Life has established
a special multi- faith corridor in Beebe Hall. Click
here for more on housing at Wellesley College.
Dining
In
the past few years, Al-Muslimat has worked with dining services to ensure
that halal meat is served on campus. It is currently being served in Cazenove
dining hall at least once a week. During the month of
Ramadan, Dining Services often increases the number of times during
the week they serve halal meat. Al-Muslimat also holds catered dinners
for students throughout the year. Click here
for more on dining at Wellesley College.
Prayer
Room
The
prayer room is located on the ground floor of the Schneider building.
Al-Muslimat holds jummah prayers (friday prayers) every week. In addition,
Al-Muslimat holds weekly halaqas. For more on prayer services at Wellesley
College, click here.
Student
Organizations at Wellesley College
Al-Muslimat
often collaborates with other organizations to hold events pertinent to
Muslims and Islamic issues. Al-Muslimat also often seeks co-sponsorship
from the History, Religion, and Middle Eastern studies departments. A
list of student organizations and their websites can be found here.
Intercollegiate
Activity
Wellesley
College students have long been active in the intercollegiate MSA community
in Boston. Given that Boston is the world's second largest college city
(after Tokyo, Japan), the city of Boston is the hub of collegiate activities
in the United States. The resources available to students in the Boston
area are numerous, and Muslim students in Boston are no exception. Al-Muslimat
is an active part of the Boston
Council of MSAs and helps organize and participate in dinners, events,
lectures, and conferences the council holds.
