The Wellesley College Dancers is a student organized dance company at Wellesley College dedicated to the celebration of dance, currently advised by Samantha Cameron. The company represents a variety of training in the art of dance. Dancers within the company are not only experienced in classical and lyrical ballet, modern, and jazz, but also in tap, flamenco, Russian character dancing, swing, clogging, and many more culturally diverse styles.
The company was first acknowledged by the College in the fall of 1984. It was organized by a group of 25 students interested in providing a place for students to not only explore their talents in dance but also to express these talents through performance.
Today, although the company represents 17 active Wellesley College students, it has grown significantly in both its professional approach to dance performance as well as in its popularity within the Wellesley community.
Auditions for the Wellesley College Dancers are held twice a year, at the beginning of the fall and spring semesters. For more information, interested persons should look for announcements around campus or e-mail us.
The Wellesley College Dancers perform twice each year in both fall and spring productions. These productions present a collection of pieces choreographed and set by the dancers themselves, sometimes along with a company piece featuring the choreography of a guest instructor.
Guest instructors are professional dancers/teachers/choreographers invited to Wellesley to administer dance classes (Master Classes) or a dance workshop. Guest instructors are also invited to offer the company a piece of choreography intended for an upcoming performance.
The Wellesley College Dancers has been honored with wonderful guest instructor/choreographers, including Jannis Brenna, Art Bridgman and Myrna Packer, James Robey, Jim Viera, Bryan Steele, Adrienne Hawkins, Margot Parsons, Jolie Yawitt, Kim Hale, Brooke Sheridan, Lisa Simon and the Paul Taylor II Company.
