4/1/04 Meeting Minutes
I. Aitken Lecture
a. Wednesday, April 7th at 5:30 in PNE Atrium
b. Dinner will be served to a limited number of people afterwards
II. Fundraising Status
a. Preparing for next yr and budgeting for Aitken Lecture
b. SOFC budget and SOAC
III. Newsletter
a. Purpose: "promote economic awareness throughout the student body about issues both on campus and off campus"
b. See newsletter conference for detailed information and article submissions
c. Further issues to address include structure of newsletter committee, title, interest, layout, etc.
IV. New Constitution Approved

a. Poster (and spam) for Aitken lecture

I. Newspaper
a. Suggestions include international column, current events, monthly column by professor, upcoming events column, meeting minutes updates, topics should be provided as suggested ideas for contributors (although contributions will not be limited to these suggested topics), have a place to announce department news, such as new courses.
b. Newspaper editor will be a new position on the eboard
1. Editors will exist for each column of the newsletter
2. We’re looking for someone who wants to head up the first issue – let us know if you’re interested!

I. Election for ESA president
a. Marisol Trowbridge was elected President for the next school year
II. Review of Last Semester
a. Jeff Frankel- Harvard Kennedy School Professor- lecture on changing economics of political parties
b. Brown Bag Lunch- Rachel Bouvier
III. Fundraising
a. T-shirts "I do it with models"
IV. Developing Plans for this Semester and Next Year
a. Newsletter
i. Purpose: to address current events in econ and involve the Wellesley community in ESA
ii. Monthly web publication- mailing list on first class
b. Class Reps
i. Purpose: Forge Link between ESA and the department
ii. Looking to have one rep in every class
iii. Role of rep: flexible, but must make announcements for ESA events in class
iv. Volunteers began to sign up at the meeting – people can continue to volunteer on the ESA Conference
c. Department Teas
i. Faculty will be present- get to know the department better

I. Elections for new ESA President
a. Marisol Trowbridge will run unopposed
b. The elected candidate will spend this semester with the current president to train for next year
II. Brown bag lunch
a. There will also be another brown bag lunch in March.
III. Speakers
a. Be thinking about possible speakers
b. February 22nd is the lecture deadline date
c. Expenses must be planned by March 7th

a. Must be held once a month

a. Thinking about creating a position to lead the newsletter

I. We welcomed Eric and Sue to our final meeting of the Year to discuss our goals and ideas for the spring semester
II. Ideas/Issues for Spring Semester
A. Membership
1. Constantly trying to get more students involved
a. Will implement class rep system next semester - volunteers from general membership will make ESA announcements in their Econ Classes
b. Letter to all majors and minors via snail mail to invite them to our first general meeting next semester
2. Department Teas
a. The ESA will sponsor "Tea" with the Econ faculty for students monthly next semester. Most likely Wednesdays during community time we will serve cookies/tea/etc and have casual social time with faculty
b. Will work teas into SOFC budget for next year to secure financing
3. Newletter
a. We will start a newsletter next semester to become a regular online/email publication in 2004/2005. Students and faculty will be able to submit articles about Econ current events on and off campus
b. Will generate new Eboard position for 2004/2005 to oversee newsletter
4. Spring Lecture
a. Would like to bring Adelaide Aitken to campus to discuss financial planning, smart investments, etc for students - she is alum and is a financial planner for women. Might collaborate with Chip to include housing.
b. Sue and Eric will check with faculty to see if they have suggestions for an academic speaker as well - must work with/around Goldman Lecture.
5. Other Events
a. Social/Econ Events with other campuses
1. Will look into whether a similar org exists at MIT, Harvard, etc
2. Look for cosponsorship opportunities
b. Brown Bags
1. Will start with Brown Bag with Kyle Kauffman during second week of spring semester - Hadley has been talking with Kyle about the details
2. Three new/visiting professors coming next semester, potential brown bag speakers to consider
3. Sue suggested we hold brown bags later in day as lunchtime is so busy and few people can attend
a. Will talk to Chip about organizing a group visit to the Fed in Boston
b. End of Year Party
6. President of ESA for 2004/2005
a. Marisol will be running for the position of President - elections will be held at first general meeting
b. Great semester everyone! Good luck on exams and have a wonderful break - the ESA will be bigger and better than ever next semester!
10/28/03 Executive Board Meeting of the ESA
I. Jeff Frankel Lecture on Nov. 13
a. Still waiting for notification if CLCE funding was approved - will update
b. Katie and Sylvia created preliminary posters which we will adapt for advertising - we will also get spamming email and making table tents
c. Amanda is looking into prices for Amarin and Lemon Thai for food following the lecture
d. We are hoping to give Professor Frankel a nice gift after the lecture - possibly some Wellesley apparel and a small honorarium
II. New Business
a. Sylvia suggested that we create a weekly/monthly E Newsletter with current Economics events from both on and off campus - we would have professor input and student articles about important and interesting Econ topics - way to get more people involved in the ESA
b. Working on planning a brown bag lunch with Kyle Kauffman to discuss his work in South Africa - tentatively scheduled for the week after Thanksgiving (Dec 1)

a. Thursday, November 6 at 12:30 on the top floor of Schneider - all welcome!
IV. Next General Meeting
a. Monday, November 10 at 7:00pm in the Stone Davis Living Room - please come!
10/7/03 General Meeting of the ESA
I. Brown Bag Luncheon on October 16th
a. One of our visiting professors, Professor Rachel Bouvier will be speaking about political economy in Pendleton at 12:30 (room TBA). Everyone is welcome to bring their own "brown bag" lunch to the meeting.
II. Jeff Frankel Lecture
a. As of now, the lecture will be held in the Pendleton Atrium. We are hoping to be able to provide dinner afterwards at the College Club, but there is also the possibility that dinner will be provided in the atrium. RSVP will be necessary. More details will be coming soon!
III. Future Meetings
a. We are brainstorming ideas for speakers and possible trips later this semester. Please come to the next meeting with any suggestions you have in mind!
b. Possibilities include a trip to the Fed (very exciting!) and the author of Rich Dad, Poor Dad, Robert Kuyosaki to be next semester's main speaker.
9/25/03 General Meeting of the ESA

II. Our faculty advisor is Eric Hilt
III. Election of open offices
a. Secretary
i. Three candidates gave statements of intent
ii. Sylvia Kuyel was elected by majority voting as ESA Secretary
b. Webmistress
i. No candidates stepped forward - this position is still open!!
IV. Constitution
a. ESA Constitution was amended to include new SOAC legislation
b. Constitution will be posted on conference.... please post if you have any questions, objections, etc or find any errors.... if no one comments, Maggie will submit as is on Saturday
V. What is the ESA? What do we do?
a. Promote Econ department and facilitate interactions between students and professors
b. Spread word around campus about important econ events and developments
c. Bring one guest lecturer to campus each semester
d. Holds brown bag lunches with professors in the department so that they can present their research and students get to know them better
e. Holds an end of semester party for department, econ students and ESA members
VI. Membership
a. **Must attend 2 meetings to be a member of the ESA, must also attend at least one event
b. Exec board meets every two weeks
c. Association will convene once per month either for meetings, events or both... sometimes more often
VII. Lecture with Professor Jeff Frankel from Harvard
a. Will speak about the seeming reversal of the economic platforms of the democratic and republican parties... tentative date is November 13... more details to come! Help us plan this event! email Amanda Cotterman

a. This semester's brown bag lunches: likely to be Rachel Bouvier and Kyle Kauffman.... email the conference if you have any other suggestions!
