SPRING 2004

Club Filipina is getting down and busy and downright cultural this semester! You know you want to join in the fun! Check it out and mark your calendars! Do check the website often, however -- check the Firstclass Conference if you are a Wellesley Student (Firstclass -> Student Forums -> Student Organizations -> Club Filipina) -- to see if there are changes or additions.

TAGALOG CLASSES

Class I Sunday, February 22, 2004 / 11am-12pm | Billings 100, Schneider Center
Class II Sunday, March 7, 2004 / 11am-12pm| Billings 100, Schneider Center
Class III Sunday, April 18, 2004 / 11am-12pm| Billings 100, Schneider Center
Class IV Sunday, May 2 , 2004 / 11am-12pm| Billings 100, Schneider Center

Club Filipina will be offering informal, fun, and highly educational Tagalog classes for four sessions throughout Spring 2004. No previous knowledge of Tagalog is required. In fact, we prefer it that way! This class is ideal for folks who want to learn basic Tagalog; are planning to take a trip to the Philippines and would like some pointers on how to get around; would like to impress their friends by being able to say, "Can I please have some of that lechon?" in Tagalog; would like to understand what their Tagalog-speaking relatives are laughing about at dinner; or would simply like a fun glimpse into the most commonly-spoken Filipino dialect!

Classes will be taught by four Wellesley students: Karla Calinawan, Ana Mercado, and Erica dela Cruz, and Natasha Villacorta. Classes are largely conversation-based, but we will be working from a fun workbook as well.

Classes are scheduled for Sunday brunch once a month for the semester. Please check this website or the Firstclass conference for updates or changes.

PAN-ASIAN CULTURAL SHOW
Friday, March 12, 7-9 pm
Jewett Auditorium, Wellesey College

Club Filipina will be performing a modern tinikling dance, traditional tinikling, and carinosa. It will be super fun, even though most of us don't even know how to dance with bamboos and are faced with the challenge of not breaking our legs during the show. The event is free for Wellesley students but costs money for the general public. Not that much, though. Come and attend! The first show last year was a HUGE success!

DANCE PRACTICE and SHOW REHEARSAL:
5pm to 7pm in the Shafer Rec Room:

  • Feb. 23 (Monday)
  • Feb. 27 (Friday)
  • March 1 (Monday)
  • March 5 (Friday)
  • March 8 (Monday)
  • Dress rehersals March 9
  • Pan-Asian Cultural Show March 12

NEW YORK RETREAT
Friday, April 2 to Sunday, April 4

That's right, folks! Club Filipina is taking a trip to New York to experience the sights and sounds of the big city. This will all be in the context, of course, of the Filipino culture in the Big Apple, from eating Filipino food to doing Filipino-related community work to visiting Filipino NGOs. Plans are still tenative, but one thing is certain: the retreat is going to rule school!

Funds are limited to 12 people, so sign up early! We will be taking two-three student-driven vehicles and will be staying together at a cozy hostel/hotel in the city. It will be fun! Contact an e-board member or go to the Firstclass Conference for more info.

POTLUCKS
We at Club Filipina believe in getting to know other cultures and eating their food. Because we are nice, we allow them to eat our food, as well. This semester, we plan to have potlucks with the happenin' women of MEZCLA, VSA, HAWAII CLUB and TCO.

FUNDRAISERS

  • FILIPINA AIRPORTERS
    March 19, 2004

As a service to the Wellesley community, (see how cool we are?) we will be providing rides to the airport for Spring Break as our major fundraising effort this semester. Our safe driver, co-president Karla Calinawan, will be picking up and taking Wellesley students to Boston's Logan Airport for two-three scheduled trips on the afternoon of March 19. The rest of the club will help carry luggage and such. All for much less than the cost of a taxi or airporter! What a great deal! Tell all your friends!

  • CLUB FILIPINA T-SHIRTS
We will be making, selling, and wearing Club Filipina T-shirts this spring! They will be hip, fun, and totally rad. We are in the process of coming up with a design. Feel free to throw in some ideas!

Contact an e-board member or go to the Firstclass Conference for dates, times, activities, and FOOD information!
