Personal Stories

Club Filipina affects its members in a variety of ways. For some, the organization reminds them of home and for others, it is a source of entertainment. Below are some touching narratives that Club Filipina members decided to share.

Van"Well, first of all, I'd just like to let you know that I am NOT Filipina, and yet I'm in the Club Filipina. It's open to everyone who is interested in Filipino culture. I am ethnically Cambodian, but the Kamayan event, which is occurring December 2nd on the MIT campus (on a Sunday!), interested me. The idea of doing modernized versions of the tinacling was fascinating. So of course I wanted to be down!! The tinacling is a dance where performers would dance or hop around two long poles of bamboo that are tapped together constantly (Cambodian culture also has something very similar to this)."

minnie "Club Filipina has always been an amazing organization for me. When I was a first year, it connected me with home-like things. You know how some foods just bring you home? The food study breaks that Club Filipina sponsors just bring me home. The Spam study break with the girls was great and also the polovoron making session was so much fun. Coming into my sophomore year, Club Filipina has, for me, come to a different light. There are so many issues that affect Filipinas worldwide that Club Filipina should bring to the light of Wellesley College. While my first year was spent connecting to home, my second year is spent connecting to people here and others in the Boston area and world wide. Each year, Club Filipina grows into something new for me and it just strengthens and enriches me. (Yes I know I sound mad cheesy but I mean it!!!) One last thing, Club Filipina eboarders and general members rock the world!!!!!"

Karla"Something happened to me when I joined Club Filipina. Instead of thinking myself as an Asian-American, I started viewing myself as Filipino-American. Perhaps it was something about having Wellesley sisters who knew what "balikbayan" boxes meant. Or missing everything about home.... only to find something similar here. Whether it's something seemingly small, like eating Spam together and having dance practices, or something monumental, like meeting the former president of the Philippines, spending time with Club Filipina members is always an incredible experience. I will treasure the experiences for the rest of my life!"
