About JOI

Since 1997, Jam On It (J.O.I.), a benefit show held annually in the spring, has become an established tradition in the FreeStyle culture. Hip Hop dance groups gather from all over the New England area to perform and raise money for Boston City Lights (BCL), a non-profit performing arts school (click here for a list of guest groups). This year, the theme is, "the 11th Hour," to celebrate the 11th annual year that we are holding the show.

J.O.I. has been growing in popularity as the numbers of performers and people in attendance have continued to rise. In many ways, J.O.I. is a primary funding source for BCL and annually funds various programs that are incredibly significant to the school, such as their summer camp programs. As our audience's support for J.O.I. has increased, so has the average amount we donate to BCL. The organization has truly come to rely on our show and members feel like they are a part of the Wellesley family because of the long-standing relationship they have with FreeStyle.

Because J.O.I. is incredibly integral to the structure of FreeStyle, time-consuming and complicated to arrange, there are two executive board positions devoted solely to planning the show and these individuals, with the support of the other executive board members, work all year to make the show as successful as possible.

Last year, J.O.I. was held off-campus in the MIT Kresge Auditorium due to scheduling conflicts on Wellesley’s campus. FreeStyle was extremely lucky to have procured Kresge Auditorium through the support of Wellesley and MIT students and administration and was able to raise an incredible $1180 in profits for BCL. "The 11th Hour" has been brought back to its home location, Alumnae Hall, on the Wellelsey College campus.

For "the 11th Hour," we have set a goal to raise $1100 to donate to BCL and we hope you will help us reach it. Please look out for any promotional events and ticket sale locations. Tickets for the show, as well as raffle tickets for an iPOD and a FreeStyle track jacket, will be on sale starting March 31st.

Thanks for all your support!

Love,

The ladies of FreeStyle
