The fact that Wellesley's program is in Bologna, rather than Florence
or Rome, for
example, places students in a much less tourism-oriented environment. It's
harder to find people who speak English - which is great, because students
are encouraged to make contact with Italians in their own language, and the
Italian culture is much more immediate and available. At the same time, Bologna is a
good-sized city with a vibrant and large student population, coupled with
lots of history, good restaurants, social activism, and easy travel to
other places - there's something for everybody!

ECCO spring 2004
I have wanted to study abroad for years, and as an Italian-American, Italy was
the obvious choice. Although most art history majors choose to study in Florence, I am happy I chose Bologna instead. Unlike Florence's
tourist-laden atmosphere, Bologna is a real city with Bolognese and
Italians from all over the country who have chosen to study here. In fact,
my suitemates came from Calabria, Abruzzo and Puglia to study here.
Moreover, having them as roommates has been one of the best parts about
studying through ECCO. Not only are all my classes in Italian, and I get
the opportunity to study at the University of Bologna, but I spend all my
time back at my apartment speaking Italian as well. It is the easiest, but most
difficult way to learn about Italian culture--I thoroughly enjoy it all the
same.
