About Us

Medicine is usually the career of choice for all those interested on pursuing a career on the health profession. At Wellesley College, students primarily choose medicine in part because 1) the resources available at Wellesley College for those students interested on the health professions are geared towards medicine & 2) there is not only a lack of information about dentistry, but also a misconception on the opportunities that dentistry can offer as a career.

As medicine, dentistry provides direct patient care, opportunities on academics, conducting research, and working in public and international health. The purpose of our pre-dental organization is then to reach out to prospective, new, and current students and promote dentistry as a career offering as many opportunities as medicine. Our efforts on getting more people interested on dentistry have also the objective to demand for the creation of resources for dental students.

Our concern as a pre-dental organization is not only due to the current lack of interest on the field of dentistry here at school, but also because of the increasingly demand for dentists across the country. According to the American Dental Education Association (ADEA), in the USA there are currently a low number of dentists per population, existing on average one dentist for every 1, 836 people. This becomes of great concern considering that in the next decade the demand for dental care will significantly increase as a result of population growth, the retirement of the baby boomers and the upcoming retirement of current dentists.

As an organization we plan to provide pre-dental students with information at the educational and professional level with the purpose of helping them become highly qualified applicants for dental school. On the educational aspect we intend to provide all the relevant information about the courses required for the application to dental schools as well as about information necessary for the Dental Admission Test (DAT). On the professional aspect, we will provide the necessary information on how to gain experience on the dental field being this acquired by working in a dental office and/or by going abroad in a medical team mission prior to their application to dental schools. Given that women continue to be an underrepresented minority in dentistry, the existence of our organization in women's college is also of great importance.
