Frequently Asked Questions

Small Yellow Sheila FAQ Medium Yellow Sheila FAQ Large Yellow Sheila FAQ

When do I need to start seeing a gynecologist?

Health Services recommends an exam when you become sexually active or else by the time you graduate from college.

How does ovulation fit into my menstrual cycle?

A woman ovulates about two weeks before the start of her period. But most cycles are at least slightly irregular, so be careful!

What do I do if I think I have a yeast infection?

Go see a clinician! Never self-diagnose yeast or urinary tract infections. Their symptoms are common to many other infections, and there is a good chance of (dangerously) misdiagnosing.

What are the life spans of sperm and eggs?

Sperm can live in a womanıs body for 3 to 5 days. A released egg can live for up to 48 hours.

Does pre-ejaculate contain sperm?

Pre-ejaculate can certainly contain sperm, especially after a recent ejaculation.

How long after starting on birth control pills can I safely have sex?

Consult your physician and read the instructions that come with your pill. Most pills are not effective at preventing pregnancy until after you have taken a week's worth.

What contraceptives are offered on-campus?

The clinicians at Health Services can prescribe: diaphragms, cervical caps, oral contraceptives ("the pill"), Depo-Provera, and Lunelle. A clinician can refer you to another clinic for Intrauterine Devices.

If I go to Health Services, will my parents find out?

No - without your permission, your parents will never find out about visits to Health Services. If you are covered under college insurance, there is no bill, and your parents will not receive an itemized statement. If you are not covered under college insurance, a bill for your tests will come first to your dorm, and if you do not respond within 30 days, only then will it be sent to your parents. So you have ample opportunity before it gets sent home to pay it or to discuss it with the billing secretary at Health Services.
