History

Student Organizations at Wellesley College are funded by the Student Activity Fee (SAF), which is included in tuition and fees paid by every student. The Fee for the 2007-2008 1983 Election at Wellesley school year is $212 per student, and is esentially the a students ticket into to any event on campus put on using SAF. The SAF money is allocated by the Student Organization Funding Committee (SOFC).

Wellesley is unique in that Student Activity Fee money is completely controlled and administered by students through the Student Bursar's office, which is headed by the Student Bursar, a member of College Government Cabinet.

The Student Bursar is both the manager of the Student Bursar's office and the chair of the Student Organization Funding Committee (SOFC), a committee made up by approximately 15 students who represent residence halls and student organizations. Students at large from the great Wellesley community are invited to attend the first two SOFC meetings of the fall semester to join the SOFC. SOFC is given the mandate of interpreting finance legislation and setting the budget for the academic year following their tenure.

The Student Bursar's Office has a staff of 4 students, working as bookkeepers. These students are employees of the the office and are under the managment of the Student Bursar. The Student Bursar's Office works in close collaboration with the Wellesley College Controller's Office in an effort to ensure that all Student Organzation accounts are managed in a accountable and fiscally sounds manner.

Wellesley has over 170 student organizations, and keeping track of all of their budgets is a big task that is taken very seriously. The Student Bursar works with each Student Organization Treasurer in order to ensure that Wellesley College Student Organizations are able to reach their greatest potential and that financial instability of SOFC does not limit their ability to do so.

Student Bursars of the past have developed SOFC legislation and the system that we run by today. The Bursar continually works with the college community and the Funding Committee in order to address problems, streamline the system, and maintain accountability for student organizations.
