How Does the SOFC Committee Work?

For information regarding your SOFC account, please visit the Account Information page.

Who is eligible?

Membership in the SOFC Committee is mostly composed of senators elected by their residence halls or special interest organization; however, any student member of the college community who pays the student activity fee is eligible to join. As per legislation, however, you must join at the beginning of the school year. This is for continuities sake, so that the composition of the committee remains the same throughout the year.

What is the Student Bursar's role in Committee?

The Student Bursar is but one voice in a committee of equals. All committee members opinions are heard, and decisions are based on the committee's vote.

Can I come to a meeting?

Yes! While most SOFC meetings are closed, there is an open meeting at the beginning of each semester. This allows organizations to meet SOFC members and discuss budgeting and funding allocations with the committee. Although all other SOFC meetings are closed, the decisions are always made public.

What should I do if I want to appeal to a precedent or policy?

You can e-mail the "Financal Appeals" FirstClass conference. Your appeal will be heard by the committee in a timely manner, and you will be notified as soon as a decision has been made.

Where can I find out what goes on at a particular meeting?

Important information regarding allocations of funds is posted to various conferences, especially the Treasurer's Conference and the Student Senate Conference.

On what criteria does the Committee base its decisions?

The committee's decisions are based on the SOFC constitution and precedent developed throughout the year. The committee only considers information included in the application, so no outside information will be considered. Thus, the committee bases its decisions on the justification you have provided it for your request. In the case of budgets, if the budget is filled out correctly and completely, with acceptable justification, your request will be granted. All organizations are subject to across the budget cuts if the amount requested in a funding deadline exceeds the amount SOFC has to allocate. For Uniquely Compelling, budgets are randomized and drawn until all available money is distributed. The committee does not make value judgements on the validity of a request; if requests are formatted properly and sufficiently justfied, they are granted and allocated based on SOFC's total funds for the deadline.
