Welcome to the Taiwanese Students Association of Wellesley College!

In the fall of 1999, several of us at Wellesley decided to form the first Taiwanese organization on campus. We realized that there was a strong interest in Taiwan's history, politics, and culture from Taiwanese students as well as non-Taiwanese members of the College community. It became clear that we needed an organized place to address these issues to a campus-wide audience and to communicate effectively with other Taiwanese organizations around the world. This year, TSA became an official organization and we are now actively planning our events for the rest of this year and next year.

Our Mission

TSA seeks to address issues about Taiwan in the College community and encourages open discussions about all topics. We welcome members from all backgrounds; all that we require is an interest in learning more about Taiwan.

Many people ask whether TSA is a cultural organization or a political one. The answer is both. Taiwan's unique identity and status in the world depends on both its cultural background and its politics and it is crucial that we address all aspects of Taiwan's situation.

Taiwan and China have deep and complex relationships in culture and in politics. However, TSA was not formed to promote the independence of Taiwan or the reunification of Taiwan and mainland China. The members of TSA come from a variety of backgrounds and have different views regarding Taiwan's situation. TSA only supports and respects self-determination for the people of Taiwan. It is up to Taiwan's people whether they strive for independence or reunification. Furthermore, TSA does not consider itself to be a subgroup of the Chinese Students Association.
