As college students, we come from different parts of the nation with our roots
in different communities and different issues. We've invited three service
organizations from the greater Boston area dedicated to serving various constituencies
within Boston's Asian American community to not only provide Wellesley students a
starting point to developing a sense if investment in our surrounding community
but also to provide an opportunity to learn about to learn about the political and
social issues relevant to Asian Americans in Boston.
Asian Community Development Corporation
The Asian Community Development Corporation (ACDC), a community-based organization,
is committed to high standards of performance and integrity in serving the Asian American
community of Greater Boston, with an emphasis on preserving and revitalizing Boston 's
Chinatown . The Corporation develops physical community assets, including affordable
housing for rental and ownership; promotes economic development; fosters leadership
development; builds capacity within the community and advocates on behalf of the community.
Asian Task Force Against Domestic Violence, Inc.
The Asian Task Force Against Domestic Violence, Inc. (ATASK) is a coalition of individuals
and organizations which aims to eliminate family violence and to strengthen Asian families and
communities. ATASK works with area social service organizations, institutions, and community
leaders to create an environment of intolerance towards domestic violence through community
organizing and education and outreach efforts. The Asian Shelter and Advocacy Project run by
ATASK provides emergency shelter and multilingual services to Asian families experiences harassment,
coercion, or physical abuse.
Saheli
Saheli was founded in 1996 as an affiliate of India Association of Greater Boston (IAGB).
Saheli is dedicated to helping South Asian women in the Greater Boston area. With the support
of many donors from the community, annual fundraisers, and generous grants from the Haymarket
People’s Fund, Kraft Foods, and FleetBoston Corporation, they provide a wide array of support,
resources and guidance in areas of career and health, as well as cultural and family growth.
