Mission Statement

The purpose of this organization is to represent and serve the interests of the South Asian and South Asian American community on campus and to promote awareness of the culture and history of South Asia. WASAC is a cultural, political, and social organization that also aims to provide a support system for students of South Asian descent.

Description of Positions:

President: Sarmili Saha, '05: The President shall oversee all committes and actions within the association, run all meetings of the association and executive board, delegate responsibilities to the membesr and serve as a liaison between the South Asian students and the administration, trustees, and faculty. She will also serve as Co-Chair of the Committee for South Asian Studies.

Vice President: Minakshi Biswas, '05: The Vice President shall work closely with the social, cultural, and community service chairs and coordinate all internal activities or the organiztion with particular respect to lecture programming. She shall also assume the duties and powers of the President in her absense or at her request.

Treasurer: Meera Sheffrin, '06: The Treasurer shall take responsibility for the finances of the organization.

Secretary: Sabrin Beg, '07: The Secretary shall take responsibility for publicity, attendence, producing the newsletter "WASAC weekly" and all other secretarial duties.

Social Chair: Kahini Ranade, '07: The Social Chair will be in charge of all social events and she will server as the contact for other colleges and universities. She is responsible for organizing the Big Sister/ Little Sister brunch in September as well as welcome activities for first-years and letter-writing to the income class during the summer.

Cultural Chair: Loveleen Bindra, '05 and Zafrin Rehman, '06: The Cultural Co-Chairs will be responsible for the organization of WASAC's annual cultural show, Shruti Laya.

Senator: Marium Mohammad, '07: The Senator shall server as the liaison between WASAC and student government. She will represent the South Asian community on Senate and will fulfill all responsibilities of a Senator.

Community Service Chair: Fareen Naviwala, '07: The Community Service Coordinator will plan community service activities throughout the year and facilitate WASAC involvement in existing community service projects in and beyond the college community. She will also service on multi-cultural council.

Historian: Tara DeSilva, '08: The Historian shall keep a scrapbook recording the events and collecting pictures of the year. This position may only be filled by a first-year student, and she will work closely with all members of the Executive Board, especially the secretary.
