Welcome to the homepage of the Wellesley Belly Dancing Society (WBDS). The Society was formed September 2003. We prefer not so much to give credit to particular individuals for the founding of the organization, so much as the inspiration of the Oxford model and everyone's joint efforts and enthusiasm. Stella Offner (our first president) and Zlata Hajro (our first treasurer) created the constitution for the Society. They did the official paperwork, advertised the rehearsals, etc. As the society has grown, we have expanded our repertoire to include many of the different styles of belly dancing popular today, instead of recognizing only one style.
We currently have choreographies in many different dance styles, such as American Cabaret, Turkish, American Tribal Style, modern Egyptian, and traditional Egyptian Raks Asaya. The society is open to all members of the Wellesley College community. We encourage staff to become involved along with students. You do not need any prior dance or belly dancing experience to join the society. We offer a beginner class that teaches the basic vocabulary of belly dance and a mixed level class that continues to build on the vocabulary learned in the beginner class. To see more about eligibility for the mixed level class visit the rehearsals page and email the current president to see if you qualify.
The WBDS holds a hafla at the end of each semester. Each class will work on at least one choreographed dance to perform at the hafla. The performance is a great chance for the dancers to show their friends and members of the community the new skills they are learning. If you are interested in attending these performances, look out for advertisements on FirstClass and around campus for the date and time. Along with the hafla, the Belly Dancing Society often performs with other groups on campus.
