I. Name

 

Women for Caribbean Development

 

II. Purpose

 

The purpose of Women for Caribbean Development (WCD) is to establish a meeting place and to serve as a support group for women of Caribbean descent by enhancing our cultural, social and academic experiences on Wellesley's campus. It is also to merge resources of the Black community on and off campus by coming together to promote cultural awareness.

 

III. Membership

 

General membership shall be open to all students that pay an activity fee to Wellesley College. There shall be no discrimination on the basis of race, gender, creed, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, age or financial status. The Executive Board, however, will be open only to students of Caribbean descent.

 

IV. Organization

 

This organization shall adhere to the Honor Code -- failure to do so shall result in the revocation of this constitution.

V. Powers and Duties

 

A. The President

1. Shall preside over General and Executive Board meetings

2. Shall act as the liaison and representative between the Organization and the College community

3. Be an active member of the Multi-Cultural Council and represent the Organization, when necessary, on issues concerning the College community

 

B. The Vice-President

1. Shall carry out the duties of the President when she is unable to perform them

2. Shall oversee and conduct projects within the Organization and the College community

 

C. The Treasurer

1. Shall keep a complete and up-to-date record of the monetary business of the Organization

2. Shall take care of all business concerning monetary affairs pertaining to the organization

a. receive and allot the funds of the Organization

b. oversee all fundraising events

3. Create a budget for the up coming academic year under the Student Organization Funding Committee (S.O.F.C)

 

D. Secretary

1. shall record the minutes of all meetings &endash; General and Executive Board -- and post them on WCD Conference

2. Shall carry out the correspondence of the organization between the administrative members and the general community when necessary

 

The executive officers will be responsible for the election of other officers.

 

Section 2. Of the Advisors

 

The duties of the advisor(s) are to provide support to the organization through the advisories constructive criticisms and suggestions. The advisors may also act as representatives to the College Administration and Alumnae on behalf of the organization. The advisors, however, may not step in and run the organization, since this is a student-run organization.

 

VI. Activities

 

Section 1. Meetings

 

All of the activities of this organization, including at least one opened publicized meeting per semester, will be open to the general College community, unless otherwise stated. All activities will be based on the idea of educating and informing the members of WCD and the College community as a whole. The organization shall meet biweekly unless otherwise stated.

 

VII. Quorum

 

Section 1. Transaction of Business

All business shall be transacted by a majority quorum.

 

Section 2. Constitutional Business

All business concerning the revision of this constitution shall require a 3/4 majority.

 

VIII. Finance

 

Section 1. The Organization

 

A. The financing of this organization shall occur in 2 ways:

1. The organization shall apply for S.O.F.C. money

2. This Organization shall fundraise, in addition to any S.O.F.C. funds

 

B. The President or Vice President and Treasurer must approve all charges made to the organizations account in writing

 

C. The organization shall adhere to all Student Organization Funding Committee regulations

 

IX. Elections

 

Section 1. Schedule of Officer Elections

 

A. Elections for Executive Board shall take place during the spring semester of the previous year

 

B. General elections for other positions shall take place at the beginning of the fall semester of the current academic year

 

Section 2. Officer Eligibility

 

A. President, Vice-President and Treasurer must be a rising sophomore, junior or senior of Caribbean background

 

B. Secretaries and all other positions are open to any member

 

X. Adoption

 

Section 1. The Constitution

 

This Constitution shall be valid when:

A. Adopted by a 2/3-majority vote of the stipulated quorum for business concerning the constitution

 

B. A copy has been signed by the President of this organization and by the Vice-President of College Government and is filed in the College Government Office

C. A copy has been filed in the Office of the President of the College

 

XI. Amendment

 

Section 1. The Constitution

 

A. The Constitution may be amended by the members of Executive Board, but must be submitted to the approval of the entire organization:

1. The passing of amendments must be adopted by the full 3/4 quorum stipulated for business concerning the constitution

 

B. Amendments to the Constitution may be proposed by members of the organization who are not on the Executive Board
