Amanda Sternberg Poetry Contest
A good will is not good because of what it effects or
accomplishes… it is good in itself
.  Even if by some
special disfavor of destiny or nature this will is entirely
lacking in its power to carry out its intentions
; if by its
utmost effort it accomplishes less than we had hoped
even then it would still shine like a jewel for its own
sake as something which has full value in itself
.

The Amanda Sternberg Poetry Contest, initiated in the fall of 1983 by the society, honors the life of Amanda (Mandy) Butler Sternberg ('85).

Amanda was born on October 11, 1963, to Paul J. Sternberg and B. Patricia Boyle Sternberg ('55), and grew up in Rye, NY as the middle sister of three.  Following in her mothers footsteps, Amanda entered Wellesley in the fall of 1981, having applied early decision, where she once again followed her mothers path by joining Zeta Alpha.

During the summer between her sophomore and junior years, Amanda worked in Ogunquit, ME with several classmates, some of whom were also ZA members. Amanda was preparing to spend her junior year studying abroad at Oxford when she was struck by a drunken motorcyclist on August 19, 1983 while walking home with friends from their jobs at a local restaurant. Amanda died instantly. A memorial service was held in the Wellesley Chapel after classes had begun in the fall of 1983, and the poetry contest was initiated by several of her friends in her memory.

Each spring the society continues to honor Amandas memory by holding this campus-wide poetry contest.
