Academic Resources

Wellesley's academic resources rival those of most major universities. The College is committed to providing you with the materials, technology, equipment, and hands-on research opportunities necessary to take your education well beyond the classroom and the library. Wellesley's convenient location near Boston, a city with one of the largest concentrations of academic institutions in the country, expands the resources available to its students.

  • There are five libraries on campus: Art, Music, Astronomy, Science, and main (Margaret Clapp). The total collection has 1.3 million volumes and 2,500 active periodical subscriptions.
  • The Betsy Wood Knapp Media and Technology Center has 43 workstations, four media-equipped project rooms, a linear editing room for video, a digital-based video editing suite, color laser printers, a color copier, a plotter, a film recorder, and a slide scanner.
  • Every student has her own dedicated high-speed computer network connection.
  • Satellite programming is available at 225 points in classrooms and common spaces around campus. A campuswide video network is under construction.
  • The Science Center is equipped with modern science equipment including an X-ray diffractometer, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectrometers, electron microscopes, and argon and dye lasers. The center's computer facility is open 24 hours a day.
  • The Whitin Observatory contains three permanent telescopes: 6-inch and 12-inch Alvan Clark refractors and a 24-inch telescope.
  • The Margaret C. Ferguson Greenhouses, the Alexandra Botanic Gardens, and the Hunnewell Arboretum contain one of the largest teaching collections of plants in the Northeast.
  • The Jewett Arts Center houses a student art gallery, listening rooms, practice studios with pianos, rehearsal rooms, and an electronic music lab. Alumnae Hall, the largest auditorium on campus, seats up to 1,300 people for performances.
