  Financial Aid for International Students

Wellesley is not need blind for international students. The College has the resources to support a limited number of need-based financial aid awards for international students with demonstrated need. Therefore, admission is highly competitive. For those admitted, Wellesley will fund the full amount of their demonstrated need. In recent years, we have doubled our ability to aid international students.

In determining the amount of aid given, the College examines the financial resources of the student and her family through information provided on the financial aid forms. A well-formulated financial plan is required of all financial aid applicants.

The staff of the College's Office of Student Financial Services is available for consultation with you and your family if you have questions or concerns. Please feel free to email us at finaid@wellesley.edu or call us at 781-283-2360.

ELIGIBILITY FOR FINANCIAL AID

Financial aid is available for only a limited number of international citizens. Its purpose is to support highly qualified candidates who could not otherwise attend Wellesley. Because of the competition for these funds, candidates should apply for them only if family resources cannot adequately meet Wellesley expenses. Wellesley's policy is to admit only those international students for whom we can provide support, if needed.

If you are a U.S. citizen living abroad or a permanent resident, you are considered under the same financial aid policies that apply to U.S. citizens living in the United States.

International students who receive financial aid at admission can apply for its renewal the following year. International students who do not receive financial assistance at the time of admission cannot receive it during their remaining years at Wellesley.

TYPES OF FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

Financial assistance is given in the form of scholarships (grants - gifts from Wellesley that do not have to be repaid), loans, and on-campus jobs during the academic year. For international students, scholarships and loans are applied to the cost of tuition, room and board, fees, and health insurance.

SCHOLARSHIPS/GRANTS:
Scholarships are gifts or grants aid; they do not need to be repaid. These can come from the College or outside sources.

LOANS:
Financial aid awards for international students will packaged without student loans. Under Wellesley's enhanced financial aid policy, student loans for international students have been eliminated and replaced with Wellesley scholarships/grant aid. There are no stipulations about family incomes or contributions. This decision recognizes the difficulty faced by international students who return to their home countries and must repay a student loan.

ON-CAMPUS EMPLOYMENT (WORK-STUDY):
Although no financial aid funds are set aside for travel, books and supplies, personal expenses, or expenses during the winter and summer vacation periods, on-campus earnings (work-study) may be used to help with these expenses. Students with on-campus jobs normally work 10 hours per week. Pay rates range from $8.00 - $10.50 per hour.

United States immigration regulations prevent international students from earning any substantial income in the United States, and only minimal funds can be earned through employment on campus. This limitation on paid work must be considered when you make your financial plans. Permission for summer work is granted by the United States Immigration Service only in cases of emergency. If you plan to remain in the United States during summer vacations, you must have sufficient funds for your living expenses. Limited summer housing is provided on campus for a minimal charge.
