Alumnae Association History

Programs
As the Association has grown in both size and diversity, so have its programs. The following chart summarizes the development of some of the Association's major activities:

Program
Date Begun

Alumnae Office Staff
1909

The executive director of the Alumnae Association is appointed by the board of directors to hire and direct Alumnae Office staff and oversee the operations of the office, including the business management of Wellesley, the alumnae magazine.

Alumnae Leadership Council
1911

Council is held each fall for alumnae leaders in order to present current information about the College, consider alumnae policy and indicate future lines of alumnae activity, and provide training for volunteers in club, class, and fund programs.

Wellesley Magazine
1916

The editor is appointed by the board of directors to produce a quarterly publication for alumnae and friends of the College that accurately reports current College and alumnae news and reflects on issues facing the Wellesley community, both on and off campus.

Annual Giving Program
1927

Alumnae volunteers in the class and regional networks work with the College's Annual Giving Office to encourage alumnae gift participation.

Faculty Speaker Program
1946

An outgrowth of the earlier Speakers' Bureau, this program is a primary means to achieve faculty-alumnae interaction. Faculty and College administrators are invited by clubs across the country and abroad to speak at their events, providing alumnae with the opportunity to pursue their academic interests.

Alumnae Achievement Awards
1969

The Association presents these awards annually to "alumnae of distinction who, through achievements in their field, have brought honor to themselves and to Wellesley College."

Summer Symposium
1972

This interdisciplinary program showcases the Wellesley faculty and explores academic subjects from a variety of angles and viewpoints. The multi-day program is normally held immediately before or after Reunion.
