Alumnae Association History

Programs
As the Association has grown in both size and diversity, so have its programs. The following chart summarizes the development of some of the Association's major activities:

Program
Date Begun

Syrena Stackpole Award
1982

Syrena Stackpole '09 attended 63 Reunions, a record that may never be broken. The annual award in her name recognizes exceptional commitment to Wellesley College.

ACCESS (Alumnae Career Choices Early Support System)
1983

Jointly sponsored by College Government and now administered by Wellesley's Center for Work and Service, ACCESS brings alumnae and students together. Two of its most popular programs help seniors prepare for their post-Wellesley days: "Junior and Senior Network Night" brings alumnae from various professions to campus to chat with upperclasswomen about career choices; and the "Life After Wellesley" seminar provides students with advice on real-world issues like renting an apartment and managing personal finances.

The Katharine Malone Prizes for Academic Excellence
1985

Created by Claudine Malone '63 in honor of her mother, these awards recognize Wellesley students who represent a combination of academic excellence, active and contributing citizenship, and accomplishment.

The Katharine Timberman Wright Award
1985

Established in honor of Katharine Timberman Wright '18, a former College trustee and president of the Alumnae Association, this award provides seed money to support student entrepreneurial volunteer activities on and off campus.

First Regional Forum
1988

Since 1988, the Alumnae Association has sponsored one or two regional forums each year. These one- or two-day weekend events bring alumnae from a particular geographic region together for intellectual stimulation, networking, volunteer training, and meeting old and new friends.

Diversity Fund
1993

Established following the recommendations of Wellesley's Task Force on Racial Diversity, this fund is part of the Alumnae Association's dedication to connection among alumnae of all backgrounds and the College's commitment to all of its graduates. It supports local and regional activities that strengthen connections among ethnically, racially, and culturally diverse alumnae and the College, Alumnae Association, and local alumnae networks.

Alumnae Association Web Site
1996

Since their arrival in cyberspace, the Association's web offerings have grown exponentially. Today, wired alumnae can update their contact information, network with alumnae in their professional and volunteer fields, chat with and post messages for class- and clubmates, select a permanent e-mail address, register for special events, search for their friends, and more - with the click of a mouse.

Oral History Project
1997

With this ambitious three-year project, the Alumnae Association preserved on paper the memories and insights of major participants and observers in the College's history during the 20th century.

Faculty Service Award
1998

Education is a lifelong pursuit and passion of Wellesley alumnae. With that in mind, the Association recognizes the dedicated service that faculty members give to alumnae by participating in Association programs. Award winners have included Marshall Goldman (economics department), William "Flick" Coleman, (chemistry department), and Miranda Marvin (art and classical studies departments).
