Alumnae Achievement Award Recipients
The Wellesley College Alumnae Achievement
Award recognizes the following alumnae who have brought
honor to themselves and
to Wellesley College through their outstanding achievements. The Award is
the highest honor given to alumnae for excellence and distinction in their
fields of endeavor and has been presented annually since 1970.
| Enriqueta Bond
'61 |
|
Enriqueta Bond ’61 has
made significant contributions to science and
science policy in the United States. From 1994
to 2008 she
served as the first full time President of
the Burroughs Wellcome Fund (BWF), a private,
independent foundation
dedicated to advancing the medical sciences
by supporting research and other scientific
and educational activities.
During her presidency Dr. Bond guided BWF in
its transition from a corporate to a private
independent foundation. The endowment grew
from $400 million
to $800 million; BWF awards more than $30 million
a year in grants. (more)

Helen Hays '53 |
|
Helen Hays ’53 is
a gifted scientist who is internationally recognized
for her work with oceanic birds. As chairman
of the Great Gull Island Committee at the American
Museum
of Natural History, she has worked since 1969
to protect and increase the numbers of roseate
and common
terns nesting on Great Gull Island on the eastern
end of Long Island Sound. (more)

Barbara Lea
'51 |
|
Barbara Lea ’51 (Barbara
Leacock) is one of the most widely respected and
admired interpreters of the classic American popular
song. An uncompromising jazz singer with style and
taste, she has been called “one of the greatest
singers of our time” by the New York Times.
Her long career has taken her from cabarets and concert
stages in Boston to recording studios and the theatres
across the world. (more)
