Colonial mansions
filled with colorful textiles and tiles; towering
palaces covered by colossal murals; charming
private homes filled with vibrant contemporary
art; overflowing markets offering an endless
supply of arts and crafts, and local specialties
for holiday shopping. You will experience all
of this and much more during Wellesley’s
return journey to Mexico’s heartland.
Visit the great cities of Mexico
City, Queretaro, and San Miguel de Allende while
luxuriating in three of Mexico’s most sumptuous
hotels. Our journey will be led in Mexico City
by part-time Mexican resident James Oles, Professor
of Latin American art at Wellesley College as
well as cultural experts along the way. Oles’ passion
for Mexican history and art and his appreciation
of the country’s culinary and visual delights
will enliven your experience. He will give us
the stories behind the famous murals and great
landmarks while introducing us to the contemporary
art scene. The tour begins in Mexico City, where
we spend our nights in the beautiful Four Seasons
Hotel and our days uncovering the city’s
artistic marvels. The renowned exhibitions of
the Anthropological Museum will be covered in-depth.
The great murals of Diego Rivera and the priceless
colonial art collection of the Museo Nacional
are just a few of the highlights of our stay.
Next, we continue to the great undiscovered "Silver
City" of Queretaro. En route, we encounter
a hidden monastery and archaeological sites with
unique early works of art. In Queretaro, we will
visit romantic, colonial churches and convents,
meet local artisans, and enjoy lunch in a historic
mansion. The tour comes to a memorable close in
beautiful San Miguel de Allende, Mexico’s
garden city and a wonderful cradle of art and
culture. Join the famed House and Garden Tour,
marvel at the “Sistine Chapel of Mexico” in
Atotonilco, and enjoy free time to browse the
town’s shops and markets. Before leaving,
we’ll meet with local alumnae in a lovely
private home and celebrate together over a festive
farewell dinner.
With superb deluxe accommodations,
a wealth of behind-the-scenes cultural visits,
talented academic leadership, and the natural
warmth and beauty of Mexico, this tour is sure
