| Umbria
and Rome: Mystics and Masters |
2006
March
10 - 20
|
For centuries, the
hill towns of Umbria and the ochre-hued palaces
of Rome have been home to fascinating, world-changing
people. From the mystical days of early Christian
Saints to the masterful frescoes created by Renaissance
masters, this area of central Italy has been
blessed with an amazing cultural heritage. Winding
through vine-clad hills near Assisi,
or walking along Rome's imperial boulevards,
one senses a living history that gives these
ancient places a unique spirit.
Accompanied by Richard Wallace,
specialist in Italian Art of the Renaissance
and Baroque and Professor of Art at Wellesley
College for over forty years, we'll have the
opportunity to sample the best of Umbria and
Rome in the good company of Wellesley alumnae
and friends.
First, we'll spend six days discovering
the pleasures of Umbria. From our base amidst
the medieval fountains and palaces of Perugia,
we'll travel to beautiful Assisi to visit St.
Francis, sample the ceramic wares of tiny Deruta,
and discover the charming, out-of-the-way villages
of Gubbio and Spello.
We'll follow in the footsteps of Renaissance
artists like Piero della Francesca (in Sansepolcro and Arezzo)
and Raphael (in Urbino and Perugia),
taste fine local wines and olive oils, and learn
how to make fresh pici pasta in a private kitchen.
In addition, we'll enjoy the hospitality of distinguished
local families while sharing meals in their historic
residences.
Finally, we'll meander through
the lush countryside to Rome where
we visit churches in search of canvases by Raphael,
Caravaggio, and Carracci and marvel at the splendid
marble figures of Gianlorenzo Bernini at the
Galleria Borghese, Piazza Navona, and Sant'Andrea.
During an exclusive private opening of the
Vatican Museum and Sistine Chapel, we'll have the best of Michelangelo and
Raphael all to ourselves! Other highlights include a private opening of the
Palazzo Farnese and a farewell dinner in the palazzo of a prominent noble Roman
family.
Throughout our tour we'll enjoy
deluxe accommodations, behind-the-scenes cultural
visits, talented academic leadership, and the
natural warmth and beauty of Italy. For a special
view of central Italy's countless treasures,
join us next spring on this custom-designed getaway! |
