Antiquities of Egypt and Jordan
|
February 25-March 10, 2009
|
This winter, join
Wellesley alumnae and friends as we marvel at
the awe- inspiring
pyramids of Egypt and enjoy the wonder of Jordan’s
rose-red city of Petra, carved into sandstone canyons
and hills. A four-night cruise along the Nile highlights
this extraordinary journey.
Accompanying us as we travel through these historic
and ruggedly beautiful landscapes will be Harvard
professor David Mitten, a renowned scholar of art
of the ancient world. This is a shared program
with Vassar College and Miami University. Our journey
will be enhanced by Miami University professor,
Osama Ettouney who is currently researching 19th-century
Egypt and its connection to the European industrial
revolution and the Romantic period.
Our trip begins in Cairo, a city
where the ancient and modern worlds meet. Known
as the “Triumphant
City,” Cairo’s rich history will spring
to life as we explore the Great Pyramid complex
at Giza; the Step Pyramid of King Zoser, dating
from the 27th century B.C.E.; and the Islamic and
Coptic sections of the city. A privately chartered
plane will take us to Luxor, gateway to the magnificent
temple of Karnak and the Valley of the Kings, where
the tombs of pharaohs were cut deep into the mountainside.
From there, we travel to Abu Simbel, site of
the unforgettable colossal statues and rock temples
of Ramses II. Next, we fly to Jordan and experience
Petra, once the thriving southern capital of
the Nabataeans. We will drive along the Desert
Highway to Madaba to view the exquisite third-
to seventh-century mosaics and visit Mount Nebo,
where Moses viewed the Promised Land. Finally,
we will arrive at the Dead Sea, where we will
have an opportunity to experience its buoyant
waters and enjoy an excursion to Jerash, one
of the best-preserved cities of ancient Rome.
Congenial company, fine accommodations and magnificent
antiquities will combine to capture the essence
of both ancient and modern Egypt and Jordan.
We hope you will join us on this memorable journey.
