Art and Culture in the Bay of Naples |
March 16-25
|
Generations before savvy tourists whiled away their
hours under the Tuscan sun or along the French Riviera, the Bay of Naples
was the place to be seen in Europe. This spring join Wellesley alumnae
and friends as we journey to this storied landscape.
The Bay of Naples beckons to everyone—from
ancient Greek heroes to Roman emperors to pampered
aristocrats on their grand tour. Even today, it’s
difficult to find another place with such a seductive
combination of natural and man-made beauty, where
cascading seaside towns offer beautiful hand-made
ceramics, and powerful ancient sculptures complement
garden estates.
Accompanied by Richard Wallace,
a specialist in Italian art of the Renaissance
and Baroque periods,
we will discover the very best of the Bay of Naples.
The tour begins in Naples, where we will visit
hidden churches and palaces, experience classical
grandeur at the National Archaeological Museum,
and delight in the great paintings of Capodimonte, “the
Uffizi of the South.” Outside the city, the
opulent palace and monumental park of Caserta offer
a grand diversion, accompanied by a relaxing day-long
excursion to the quiet
garden island of Ischia.
Then we will head for the stunning
vistas and leisurely elegance of the Amalfi Coast.
The “string
of pearls” along the coast—villages
such as Positano, Amalfi, Ravello—will come
alive through special tours and gourmet meals.
We will visit the ruins of Pompeii and get a glimpse
of life and culture in ancient Rome. The great
Greek temples of Paestum will be surrounded by
early wild-flowers, and the quaint ceramic shops
of Vietri will be offering new spring wares.
Highlights
include meetings with a renowned ceramic artist
in Vietri sul Mare, an organic farmer who
produces mozzarella di bufala cheese, and an
artisan who still produces wooden Nativity scenes
by hand. We will be guests at the country estate
of an aristocratic family and the beautiful city
palace of an art collector.
With expert academic leadership and behind-the-scenes
visits, there’s no better way to experience
the Bay of Naples.
