Former Secretary of State Madeleine K. Albright '59Madeleine Korbel Albright '59 was the first female US Secretary of State and the highest-ranking woman in the US government from her unanimous Senate confirmation in 1997 until January of this year. Before her appointment, she served as the US Permanent Representative to the United Nations and as a member of President Clinton's Cabinet and National Security Council. Before joining the Clinton Administration, Albright was president of the Center for National Policy, a nonprofit research organization that promotes the study and discussion of domestic and international issues. At Wellesley, Albright majored in political science and was a reporter for and editor of The Wellesley News. She later studied at the School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University, received a certificate from the Russian Institute at Columbia University, and her master's and doctorate from Columbia University's Department of Public Law and Government. |

US Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton '69Hillary Rodham Clinton '69 is a US Senator from New York, the former First Lady of the United States, an accomplished attorney, and a long-time advocate for children and families. When she won election in November, she was the first woman elected statewide in New York and the first First Lady elected to the US Senate. A 1973 graduate of Yale Law School, she served as chair of the Legal Services Corporation and as chair of the American Bar Association Committee on Women in the profession in 1987. From 1986-1989, she chaired the board of the Children's Defense Fund. At Wellesley, Clinton majored in political science and was president of College Government. She was the first student speaker at a Wellesley commencement, a tradition that continues today. |
