FIELDWORK
Philip L. Kohl participated in archaeological investigations in southeastern
Iran in the late 1960s and early 1970s and in northeastern Afghanistan in
1975-76. He also worked briefly in northeastern Iran in 1978 just prior to
the Iranian Revolution. He studied archaeological materials from Soviet Central
Asia in 1978-79, participating in archaeological excavations in southern Uzbekistan
and later in 1985 at the site of Sarazm in Tadjikistan. In 1986 he studied
archaeological materials from Transcaucasia and began a field project in southern
Georgia (Djavakheti) and northwestern Armenia (the Shirak plain) in 1990,
establishing the International Program for Anthropological Research in the
Caucasus (IPARC) and conducting excavations at the sites of Horom, Satkhe,
and Amagleba from 1990-1995. From 1994-1998 he was the American Director of
the Daghestan-American Expedition to the Early Bronze Age site of Velikent
(DAV), and in 2001-2002 he investigated late prehistoric sites in northern
Azerbaijan. He has visited archaeological sites and/or participated in international
conferences in Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey, Ukraine, southern Russia, Mongolia,
Oman, and Bahrain.
