COURSE CONTENT will:
• Cover the fundamentals of black and white photography
• Include a hands-on approach to the use of the 35 mm camera, the light meter, film developing, printing of negatives and final presentation of photographs.
• Develop critical vocabulary for visual literacy. (How to think and talk about visual arts.)
• Develop the creative process through individual and group work.
• Include demonstrations, lab sessions, museum visits, critiques and individual conferences.

GRADES
• Attendance is mandatory. So much happens in each session that it cannot be easily repeated. Please be on time and present for the whole session. There are lots of confusing details to try to put together. Please notify me if you are ill or have a legitimate reason for missing class.

• Class participation includes consistent contribution of ideas, enthusiasm, response to others' work, having assignments done on time.

• Doing your fair share of lab maintenance, keeping the facility in order and clean is of the utmost importance. Returning keys for darkroom and studio on time. (HONOR CODE)

• Technical proficiency including mastery of basic exposure, development and printing techniques demonstrated through finished assignments.

• Creative expression as evidenced through the development of expressive abilities with a visual language. Willingness to take risks to try something new. The use of photography to communicate, to express an intelligent and thoughtful idea.

• Individual assignments will not be graded. The final grade is an assessment of progress due to hard work, not necessarily latent ability or prior knowledge. Experimentation and personal expression are required. Doing the assigned amount of work with thoughtful attention to content and technique will ensure a grade in the B range; doing exemplary work will merit a grade in the A range.
