JEWETT ART GALLERY: ART FROM THE NATIVE SOIL
Oct. 8, 4:45-6:00pm

The historical origins of Chinese peasant art were rooted in the 20th-century Chinese revolution and its rise was closely tied to the social and political movements of the People’s Republic of China, especially during the Cultural Revolution (1967-1977). The current exhibition will show how Chinese peasant art continues to grow with the ever-changing China in the 21st century. An opening reception is scheduled for 4:45-6:00 pm, October 8, with the presence of the exhibition curator Feng Bin, director of the Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts Museum, and his team and the woman peasant artist Li Chengzhi from Qiqiang, Sichuan. The opening reception will also include a lecture by Heping Liu, associate professor of Asian art, “Why Peasant Art? From Mao’s Political Persuasion to the Beijing Olympic Games”. For more information, contact Gallery Director Clara Lieu at clieuwellesley.edu or 617-283-2056.
