AN ARTIST'S TALK WITH EVE SUSSMAN

Eve Sussman’s work incorporates film, video, installation, sculpture, and photography. In collaboration with The Rufus Corporation – an ad hoc ensemble of performers, artists, and musicians – Sussman has produced motion picture and video art pieces.

ART, VIOLENCE AND MEMORY

Spanish Civil War - 9/11: Art, Violence and Memory is a presentation by conceptual artist Francesc Torres. Please join us for a discussion of two of his works: the excavation of a common grave from the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) realized in 2004, and his ongoing preliminary photographic work for the 9/11 Memorial Museum at hangar 17 (JFK Airport) with objects collected from Ground Zero. The presentation will begin at 6:00pm in Collins Cinema, with refreshments served at 5:30pm. DUAL ACTION

Dual Action is an invitational exhibition which highlights work by printmaking faculty from schools in New England. The exhibition title references the double creative lives that faculty lead as independent artists and educators. Works in the exhibition represent the diversity of both traditional and contemporary techniques of printmaking including etching, lithography, silkscreen, digital print media, monotypes and more. JEWETT ART GALLERY: ART FROM THE NATIVE SOIL Oct. 8, 4:45-6:00pm
The historical origins of Chinese peasant art were rooted in the 20th-century Chinese revolution and its rise was closely tied to the social and political movements of the People’s Republic of China, especially during the Cultural Revolution (1967-1977). The current exhibition will show how Chinese peasant art continues to grow with the ever-changing China in the 21st century. An opening reception is scheduled for 4:45-6:00 pm, October 8, with the presence of the exhibition curator Feng Bin, director of the Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts Museum, and his team and the woman peasant artist Li Chengzhi from Qiqiang, Sichuan. The opening reception will also include a lecture by Heping Liu, associate professor of Asian art, “Why Peasant Art? From Mao’s Political Persuasion to the Beijing Olympic Games”. DAVIS MUSEUM: FALL OPENING

The opening celebration of the Davis Museum will include the exhibits Black Womanhood: Images, Icons, and Ideologies of the African Body (originally organized by the Hood Museum of Art at Dartmouth College), Ellen Zweig: HEAP, as well as Recent Acquisitions: Works on Paper. Please join the Davis Museum and Cultural Center in a celebration with gallery talks and refreshments. Both Black Womanhood and HEAP will be on view from Sept. 17 to Dec. 14.
