MAJOR & MINOR REQUIREMENTS__

IMPORTANT ADVICE

  • If you are a potential art history major, be sure to take a studio class before your senior year, since introductory studio art courses are not open to seniors except by special permission.

Given the hands-on nature of studio-based learning, enrollment for each studio art course must be limited. This year we have reserved a number of spaces for incoming students in sections of ARTS 105, 106, 109 and 113. If you are unable to register for one of these courses, we urge you to try again during the spring semester, and/or consider attending the first class session of a 100-level studio course in case a spot becomes available. (Email the professor so that he or she may expect you the first day).
  • If you are a potential major in studio art or media arts, please be sure to contact the Director of Studio Art, Salem Mekuria, to discuss your options.
  • If you are a potential major in architecture, please contact Phyllis McGibbon or Lara Tohme, Co-Directors.

CHOOSING AN ADVISOR

Students planning to major or minor in art should choose an advisor from among the faculty in the Art Department. The choice of advisor is up to you. Often students choose the faculty member who teaches the special field of most interest to them. In other cases students choose their ARTH 100 or 101 conference teacher or another faculty member with whom they feel comfortable.

You choose your advisor by contacting her or him directly. If you do not know who to ask, speak with the Chair of the Art Department for Fall 2006, Heping Liu x3371, or the Director of Studio Art, Salem Mekuria x2185; or one of the Co-Directors of Architecture, Phyllis McGibbon x3364 and Lara Tohme x2061, for assistance.

Consult your advisor about your major plans before you get your official major form signed.

  • For Art History majors the official form must be signed by either the advisor or by the Department Chair.
  • For Studio majors, the official form must be signed by the advisor or the Director of the Studio program.
  • For Architecture majors, one of the Co-Directors signs the official form.

You should also consult the Art Department Chair about any unusual circumstances affecting your major, or any difficulties you may be having.

For further information about any particular course, consult the instructor.

Students with disabilities who will be taking art courses and who need disability-related classrooms or testing accommodations are encouraged to meet with the Department Chair to make arrangements.
