Carbonello Lifts Wellesley Past M.I.T. 64-61

WELLESLEY, MASS. – Christine Carbonello (Londonderry, N.H.) connected on her fifth three-point field goal of the game with two seconds remaining, lifting Wellesley to a 64-61 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference women's basketball win against M.I.T., Tuesday at Wellesley. With the win Wellesley improves to 7-6 and 2-1 in the NEWMAC while MIT drops to 8-7, 2-1.

Carbonello, whose five three's ties her for second for three-point field goals made by a Wellesley player in a single game, was 5-for-7 from beyond the arc and finished with a team and season-high 23 points.

Trailing by eight at 54-46 with seven minutes remaining in the game, M.I.T. used a 14-7 run, including two six-point mini- runs, to battle to a 61-61 tie with 26 seconds on the clock. M.I.T's Crystal Russell (West Reading, Pa.) scored seven of her game-high 25 points in the run while Maria Hidalgo (Auburn, Wash.) had four points and an assist in the key run. Russell converted a lay-up and the free throw for just the game's second tie score.

After a time out and a M.I.T. foul, Wellesley inbounded the ball from underneath its own basket. Kelly Grover (Westbrook, Maine) found Carbonello in the right-hand corner for the game-winner.

Grover had a solid performance for Wellesley finishing with nine points, 14 rebounds, two assists and two blocked shots while first-year Catherine Romasco (Sutton, Mass.) had a career-high 13 points, including three three-point field goals for the Blue.
