Wellesley and Middlebury Advance to Championship Game of 2002 Wellesley Invitational

WELLESLEY, MASS. – Wellesley and Middlebury opened up their 2002-03 women's basketball campaigns victoriously in the 2002 Wellesley Invitational.

In the first game Wellesley (1-0) relied on a 20 point, 15 rebound double-double from sophomore Kelly Grover (Westbrook, Maine) to slip past Immaculata 68-54.

Wellesley trailed at the half 29-28, as Immaculata's (0-1) Lindsey Williams (Pottsville, Pa.) lit up for six three-point field goals in the first half. Williams ended the game with a team-high 18 points.

Grover, who had five blocked shots and seven assists from her post position shot an impressive 56.2% from the field to lead the Blue. Sophomore guard Erin Johnson (Westhampton Beach, N.Y.) 13 points on 5-for-13 shooting while Christine Carbonello had a game-high 23 points on 8-for-19 shooting from the field and a perfect 5-for-5 mark from the free throw line.

In the second game, Middlebury's Kristin Hanley (Seattle, Wash.) collected an offensive rebound and a put-back with two seconds remaining in the overtime period to lift Middlebury, 1-0, past a surging Augustana 66-64 in overtime. Hanley finished with game-high 23 points while Wesley Hyatt (Amesbury, Mass.) chipped in with 22 points.

Augustana, 0-1, was led by 18 points from Erica Honkala (Somonauk, Ill.) Honkala hit the game-tying basket at the end of regulation to push the game into overtime for the Eagles. Kristen Pence (Rochelle, Ill.) chipped in with 10 points for Immaculata while Kristina Nelson (Geneva, Ill.) had nine points in the losing effort.

Wellesley will face Middlebury, Sunday November 24 at 3 p.m. in the championship game of the 2002 Wellesley Basketball Invitational. Immaculata will play Augustana at 1 p.m. in the consolation game.
