Middlebury Holds Off Wellesley 62-53 to Claim 2002 Wellesley Invitational
Augustana Defeats Immaculata 78-55 in Consolation Game

WELLESLEY, MASS. – Alexis Batten (Avalon, N.J.) scored a team-high 16 points to lead Middlebury, 2-0, past Wellesley 62-53 in the championship game of the 2002 Wellesley Basketball Invitational Sunday at Wellesley College.

Batten, who chipped in with eight rebounds to lead Middlebury to a decisive 50-29 edge in rebounds, was 4-for-6 from the floor and 8-for-10 from the free throw line. Katie Shutte (Coopersburg, Pa.) had 12 points for Middlebury while Alexis Hollinger (New London, N.H.) had nine points and nine rebounds.
Christine Carbonello (Londonderry, N.H.) paced Wellesley, 1-1, with 18 points, five rebounds and three assists in a solid effort for the Blue. Bridget Harris (Newbury Park, Calif.) chipped in with 17 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals from her post-position.

It was the fourth consecutive year Wellesley had advanced to the championship game of its Invitational Tournament and the second consecutive year Wellesley has lost in the championship game.
In the consolation game, Augustana (Ill.) used a solid team effort as four players hit the nets for double-digits in scoring paced by 12 points a piece from Kristin Romolo (Washington, Ill.) and Julia Selzer (Normal, Ill.) to defeat Immaculata 78-55.

Selzer had a double-double off of the bench for Augustana with a game-high 14 rebounds including 11 offensive rebounds. Augustana, 1-1, outrebounded Immaculata, 0-2, 64-44.

Immaculata's Jessica Gailbraith (Philadelphia, Pa.) paced the Eagles with 16 points, eight rebounds and two assists while Rache Roach (Pennsauken, N.J) had a game-high 19 points in the losing effort.
Wellesley returns to action on the road, Tuesday, November 26 against Brandeis at 7 p.m.
