Swarthmore, Mt. Holyoke, Vassar and Wellesley Pick Up Wins In First Day of Seven Sisters Basketball Championship.

WELLESLEY, MASS. – After the first day of the 2002 Seven Sisters Basketball Championship, Swarthmore, the defending champion, Mt. Holyoke, Vassar, the 2001 runners-up and Wellesley College each earned wins. Swarthmore escaped Smith with a 56-53 overtime victory in the final game, while Mt. Holyoke, Vassar and Wellesley each picked up double-digit victories. Mt. Holyoke defeated St. Joseph's 77-44, while Vassar downed Haverford 50-33 and Wellesley cruised past Bryn Mawr 80-30. The Seven Sisters Basketball Championship is being hosted by Wellesley College. All games are played at the Dorothy Towne Fieldhouse, December 6-8, 2002.

In the nightcap, trailing 48-45 to Smith, 2-3, with seconds remaining Swarthmore's Debra Farrelly (Lebanon, N.J.) banked in a buzzer-beating three-point field goal to push the Garnet's into overtime. Farrelly then connected on two more trifectas in the overtime stanza to give Swarthmore, 4-1, the 56-53 overtime win.

Farrelly ended the game with five three-pointers and a team-high 21 points. Smith had four players in double digits led by 13 points from Shelly Harrison (Reston, Va.) and 12 points from Dasen Woitkowski (Pittsfield, Mass.). Harrison finished with a near triple-double on 13 points, 12 rebounds and eight block shots.

In the third game, Wellesley College, 3-3, shot 62.2 percent from the field on 33-of-53 shooting to down Bryn Mawr, 80-50. Sophomore Bridget Harris (Newbury Park, Calif.) and senior Kelly Grover (Westbrook, Maine) combined for 36 points, netting 18 points a piece to lead Wellesley. Grover was an outstanding 9-for-10 from the floor in just 22 minutes of action. Junior Elizabeth Senecal (Wellesley, Mass.) paced the Blue in the rebounding department with a game-high 14 rebounds to give Wellesley a 43-18 advantage on the boards.

Bryn Mawr's Deb Charamella (Springfield, Pa.) played well on the floor for the Mawrters, 0-5, with five points, four assists, and four steals, while Vanessa von Hagen (Wallingford, Pa.) netted a team-high 15 points.

In the second game, Vassar broke open a close game, leading 21-20 at the half, to defeat Haverford 50-33, shooting 72 percent from the floor in the second half. Natalie Serkowski (Clinton Corners, N.Y.) paced Vassar, 2-3, with 13 points while Stacey Tiamfook (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Christine Wegner (Bristol, Conn.) each chipped in with eight points a piece.

Haverford, 2-3, Catie Kimura (Kamuela, Hawaii) led the Fords with 12 points, two assists and two rebounds in 40 minutes of action while Claire Scribner (Basking Ridge, N.J.) chipped in with nine points and eight rebounds.

In the opening game, Mount Holyoke, 2-3, outscored St. Joseph's, now 2-1, 41-21 in the first half and never looked back en route to a 77-44 win. Mount Holyoke's Maeve Baroa (Norwell, Mass.) scored a game-high 18 points on 6-for-11 shooting and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Lyons while Kara Bergeron (Houston, Texas) chipped in with 14 points, five rebounds and four assists.

St. Joseph's Edna Caamano (East Hartford, Conn.) was the lone Blue Jay to score in double-figures with 10 points.

Bryn Mawr will play Haverford, December 7 at 10 a.m.. Smith will play St. Joseph's at noon; Wellesley will play Vassar at 2 p.m. and Swarthmore will face Mount Holyoke at 4 p.m.
