Wellesley and Mt. Holyoke to Face Off in 2002 Seven Sisters Basketball Tournament Championship Game.

WELLESLEY, MASS. – Wellesley and Mount Holyoke College each advanced to the championship game of the 2002 Seven Sisters Basketball Tournament as each team earned second round wins, Saturday at Dorothy Towne Fieldhouse on the campus of Wellesley College. Wellesley last played in the championship game of the annual Seven Sisters Basketball Tournament in 2000, falling to Vassar 63-59 and last won a Seven Sisters Basketball Championship in 1999, defeating Vassar 66-56. It will be the first time in nearly two decades that Mount Holyoke will have reached the championship game of the Seven Sisters Tournament. The Lyons last appearance and Seven Sisters crown was in 1983 against Wellesley College.

Wellesley, 4-2, won its third straight game, defeating Vassar 61-45 to advance to the championship game. Vassar the 2001 Seven Sisters Basketball Tournament runners-up, falls to 2-4 on the season.

Christine Carbonello (Londonderry, N.H.) scored a season-high 24 points to lead the Blue on 10-of-19 shooting from the floor and a perfect 4-for-4 mark from the charity stripe. Carbonello also chipped in with four rebounds, five assists and four steals in a steady floor game. Sophomore Bridget Harris (Newbury Park, Calif.) collected her first double-double of the season with 13 points and a team high 10 rebounds.

Wellesley took a commanding lead into the break, up 32-16 at the half after shooting a red-hot 45 percent from the field while holding Vassar to just 27 percent shooting in the first half.

Vassar's Carleen Aubee (Chepachet, R.I.) was the lone Brewer in double figures with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Stacey Tiamfook (Brooklyn, N.Y.) had nine points, three rebounds, three assists and three steals in the losing effort.

Mount Holyoke, 3-3, overcame a six-point halftime deficit to defeat Swarthmore, the defending tournament champion, 59-56. The Lyons had three players in double figures and were led by Sara Belding's (Sebastopol, Calif.) 16 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals. Belding was 7-of-17 from the floor, including two three-point field goals. Jessica Justice (Doylestown, Pa.) had 12 points and was big defensively on the boards for the Lyons coming up with a game-high 14 rebounds. Sophomore Maeve Baroa (Norwell, Mass.) chipped in with 11 points and seven rebounds for Mount Holyoke.

Swarthmore, 4-2, was led by double-doubles from Katie Robinson (Medfield, Mass.) and Zoey Adams-Deutsch (Glenside, Pa.). Robinson finished with a game-high 22 points and 10 rebounds while Adams-Deutsch finished with 14 points and a team-high 12 rebounds.

Wellesley will play Mount Holyoke, Sunday December 8 at 3 p.m. in the championship game of the 2002 Seven Sisters Basketball Tournament while Swarthmore will face-off against Vassar at 1 p.m. in the third place game. All games will be played at the Dorothy Towne Fieldhouse on the campus of Wellesley College.
