Mount Holyoke Holds Off Wellesley To Claim 2002 Seven Sisters Basketball Championship

WELLESLEY, CONN. – Christine Godin (Lunenburg, Mass.) scored four of her 11 points, converting a lay-up and two free throws, in the final 30 seconds of action to lead Mount Holyoke, 5-2, to the 2002 Seven Sisters Basketball Championship with a 57-54 win over Wellesley College, Sunday at Wellesley College. With the win Mount Holyoke claimed its first Seven Sisters Basketball Championship since 1983, also with a win over Wellesley

Trailing by eight points, 51-43, with four minutes remaining in the game following a Godin jumper, Wellesley, 4-3, clawed its way back to within two points on the heels of an 8-2 run. Wellesley's Bridget Harris (Newbury Park, Calif.) started the run, draining her first three-point field goal of the night on a cross-court feed from first-year Laura Weslander (Mendota Heights, Minn.).

Harris then found Kelly Grover (Westbrook, Maine) at the top of the key for a short jumper to cut the lead to 51-48. Senior Christine Carbonello (Londonderry, N.H.), the 2002 Seven Sisters Basketball Most Valuable Player, drained a 15-footer on an assist from Weslander before Mount Holyoke's Sara Belding (Sebastol, Calif.) knocked down a long jumper with 1:35 remaining for a 53-50 lead.

Wellesley's Harris hit the front-end of a one-and-one with 29 second remaining to cut the lead to two at 53-51, but it was as close as Wellesley would get the rest of the way as Godin took over the game for Mount Holyoke.

Mount Holyoke had three players in double figures led by 17 points and seven rebounds from Jessica Justice (Doylestown, Pa.) Maeve Baroa (Norwell, Mass.) had 12 points while Godin finished with 11 points.

Wellesley also had three players in double-figures led by a 15-point, 11-rebound performance from Harris. Grover also had a double-double for the Blue with 14 points and 12 rebounds while Carbonello had 13 points, four assists and four rebounds.
