Coast Guard Shoots Past Wellesley 69-61

WELLESLEY, MASS. – Holding on to a two-point lead at 54-52 Coast Guard’s Liz Bosma (Potomac Fall, Va.) scored 10 of her 16 points to lead the Bears to a 69-61 win over Wellesley in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference women’s basketball match-up, Saturday at Wellesley.  Bosma connected on two of her team-high four three-point field goals and netted two jump shots in the key 10-5 run for Coast Guard now 13-8 overall and 5-2 in the NEWMAC.

Christine Carbonello (Londonderry, N.H.) netted 16 points for Wellesley (9-9 overall, 4-4 NEWMAC) while Kelly Grover (Westbrook, Maine) recorded a double-double with 15 points and 15 rebounds.

Tessa Mueller (Torrington, Conn.) paced Coast Guard with a game-high 23 points, while Amy Harmel (Davidsonville, Md.) and Kristen VanHaverbeke (Stafford, Va.) each chipped in with 10 points a piece.

Coast Guard opened up the second half with an 9-2 run to break open a 35-34 game and take a 44-36 lead with 15 minutes remaining on four points from VanHaverbeke, a three-pointer from Bosma and two free-throws from Katie Johann (Bayport, N.Y.)

Wellesley cut the lead to two on three occasions, including the 56-54 margin with five minutes remaining, but it was as close as they would get the rest of the way as Coast Guard used Bosma’s run and effective free-throw shooting down the stretch connecting on 13-of-16 second half free throws to seal the win.

Wellesley returns to action Tuesday, February 18 against non-conference opponent Amherst.  Tip-off is 7 p.m.
