Coast Guard Halts Wellesley 63-56 in First Round of NEWMAC Championship
NEW LONDON, MASS. – Tessa Mueller led all
scorers with 21 points including a pair of free throws with 10 seconds
left sealing third-seeded Coast Guard’s 63-56 win over sixth-seeded
Wellesley in the first round of the New England Women’s and
Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament.
Leading by 41-36 with just under 13 minutes remaining, Wellesley
(11-10) let its advantage slip as Coast Guard pushed ahead 44-43
on the heels of an 8-2 run capped by a basket from Lis Bosma. Coast
Guard took the lead for good at 47-45 on a three-point play by Mueller
with 9:06 to play.
Wellesley closed the gap to three at 59-56 with 34 seconds remaining
as Kristin Doeberl (West Redding, Conn.) connected on one of two
free throws but it was as close as the Blue would get the rest of
the way as Coast Guard held on for the win.
Senior Christine Carbonello (Londonderry, N.H.) and Doeberl paced
Wellesley with 17 points a piece. It is the first time since the
1999-2000 season that Wellesley has failed to reach the championship
game of the NEWMAC Women’s Basketball Tournament.
